The new standard (802.11i)?

I have a few questions regarding the new wireless standard 802.11i. From what I can remember it offers better security (compared to its predecessors), but that's about it. When this comes out will users and businesses that have 802.11a/b/g have to upgrade their hardware to use it, or just apply a firmware update? Oh yeah has there been a date set for when this bad boy is going to be released?

Most wireless devices made from 2003 onwards should be upgradable via firmware.

I have no idea when its going to be released - I would guess early next year.
