The Mouse Cursor Test

Let’s take a moment and talk about the “Mouse Cursor Test” many of you are using to evaluate monitors.

I can’t think of one way to quantify this as any sort of test at all. Many of you are much younger then myself and as such your wrists are much faster then mine. (Please, no lame commentary here ok?) :rolleyes:

Where one person might move the mouse at close to some sort of gaming speed, I’m sure others of you can achieve Mach 1 on your screen with no problem.

I’ve yet to see any game that moves as fast as I can move my mouse pointer (even at my advanced age). However, I can make my mouse pointer ghost like mad on my 21” ViewSonic CRT.

Just a different perspective, but please consider it :D

I increased the update rate of my mouse from 100 to 200 reports/sec. It makes a little bit of a difference, but is not significant enough to warrant the change.

Moving the mouse back and forth very quickly causes many cursors to appear simultaneously, and they are about 1 inch apart. Now sliding the cursor across the screen at medium speed would cause some ghosting at the cursor, but the width of the ghost image is very narrow, and fades very quickly.

Viewsonic ve710s

I'm using the Viewsonic ve710s as the test because that is one of the LCDs that I tested at the store.

Moving the mouse back and forth very quickly causes many cursors to appear simultaneously, and they are about 1 inch apart. Similar to the CRT.

Sliding the cursor across the screen at medium speed would cause some serious ghosting at the cursor, and the width of the ghost image is very W I D E, and stays a lot longer than the CRT.

I think ghosting always occurs, but it is a question of how wide and how long the image stays before it completely fades away.

I agree, you can create the ghosting, but how do you repeat that from monitor to monitor with any degree of "sameness"?

We would need a “wrist accelerometer” to do that. (God I hate to open that door again :rolleyes: ) but I think you get the point.

We need some standard form of testing we can all compare together. It would eliminate all the opinion threads we seem to be seeing of late.
