I am just buying a MBP and thought the internet is a bit lakcing in this department, let's create a live list of good software for mac, categorized and rated. I may turn it into a website later on. Since I don't have mine yet, I can't recommend anything but possible categories.

I'll help.

Web Browser : Intel build of Firefox (http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2006/02/26/firefox_macintel) or Camino

Mail Client : Apple's Mail.app or Thunderbird

Media : You can't go wrong with iTunes for music. DivX has its own player when you install the codec. Don't forget to get the Xvid component for Quicktime. All Intel Macs seem to come with FrontRow but if you get a non-FrontRow-enabled PPC Mac, you need to look at MediaCentral (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28379&mode=feedback)

Games : Well...install Boot Camp and WinXP. Most Mac games are releases of their Windows counterparts and you have to wait 6-8 months because big publishers don't want to sell Mac rights in a timely manner for concurrent releases. Mac-only games that are good, however, include Marble Blast Gold (kinda like Super Monkey Ball, without the monkeys)

(Music) Creativity : Logic Express. GarageBand is a toy that's...well...OK. Logic is the real deal if you want to make music, and it blows Reason out of the water.

(Movie) Creativity : iMovie and iDVD make attractive videos and DVD's with nice menus. No need for something more powerful unless you're going to do it for a living.

Digital Photography : Photoshop buffs better wait for an Intel build of Photoshop.

(Web Site) Creativity : iWeb is cute and has some nice but if you want something more powerful, Freeway Pro and Freeway Express blow Dreamweaver out of the water. http://www.softpress.com/products/index.php

Networking/Server stuff : it's Unix, baby. Use Apache for web serving, Samba for Windows shares, etc. Don't get easier than that.

I don't agree with Itunes, what's a more powerful one that would offer me better input output capabilities such as resampling and FLAC support

Can you reason about the freeway comment?
 
in networking I was thinking about vnc client software and wireless enhancements, etc

once I get my hands on my mbp, I can try these out and put short reviews and screenshots and maybe a rating system and we could make this thread sticky worthy. So keep the candidates coming.
