Wait a second, I thought the internet was the root of all evil. Since when was the internet anyone's savior?

Facebook and Google want to give everyone internet access out of the kindness of their heart. Right...

As much as I like the internet, I loath it equally.

Because if they just bring the internet to more third world countries, it'll take care of all of the

    Lack of food
    Lack of water
    Disease
    Local wars
    Oppression
    Murders
    etc.

Education does help reduce those problems.

Not if you die of starvation, malaria or dysentery before 5. The ones left over at that point are just trying to survive.

You mean corporate initiatives exist to support corporate interests? Shocking!

Right, it is up to the elders and people in power to make use of tools that are given.

Well, I for one, think this is long overdue. It's horrific that in this day and age, 419 scams can only be perpetrated by fortunate individuals in a select few countries.

He said help, not eliminate. And it does, granted they can live long enough to reduce that problem in a more permanent way. First... they'll probably need the education that'll help them live longer, ie farming.

Bringing access to third world countries is all fine and dandy. But unless Google/Facebook also plans on putting a netbook/tablet in everyone's hands, this sounds a little pointless. When you can't afford food or healthcare, its pretty safe to assume you can't afford hardware.

That's ok, LeninGHOLA will be donating everything they need while beating up local warlords, curing diseases, and solving world hunger since he's obviously doing something other than complaining.

Private enterprise and capitalism has always done more for the world than petulant forum emos.

Having access to social networking has also helped many revolutions across the world gain traction and popular support.

Funny, since you're the one who seems to be crying in this thread.

Simple fact is, that providing internet access with no devices to connect with accomplishes nothing. Additionally, the problems that many countries face will not be resolved simply by providing internet access or education in general.

Millions of laptops, tablets and netbooks have made their way to the very poorest of countries. Even if it is only a handful of them that will be able to connect to the internet, that's better than before.

Education is the very first step to improving upon your situation. If people are able to take something from it and make their lives better, why not?

Yes, removing dictators/warlords and providing solid infrastructure would be more effective. Google and Facebook don't have those means, nor do they have the desire. So, they are doing what they can. They never set out to solve all of the problems in the world.

So, what was I crying about? Did my positive outlook give it away?

I am sure there are large areas that don't have broadband, but I would imagine dial up is more or less everywhere here. Am I mistaken?

Mark my words. One day it will be against the law not to for every single adult in the world not to be required to "check in" every day.

You won't have to worry about checking in. They'll just put a chip in you that checks in for you so you can go on being a good consumer whore/corporate slave.
