I am overclocking right now. It would greatly help me out if you guys could guide me along the way.

I am using the following
CPU- Intel 630 3ghz cooling via Thermaltake Blue Orb II
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116198
Ram - OCZ 26672048ELDCGE-K 2GB Kit DDR2-667 PC2-5400 Gold Edition 4-4-4-8
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85206
Motherboard - ASUS P5WD2 Premium
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131534

After many hour of installing stuff and a little burn in I ran my first test.

3.53Ghz was not stable

3.6

Im running mine at 3.6ghz 250x15 1.435V in bios but I get 1.51V Idle in Windows.
I can't seem to move up any at all. Any Ideas?

Cool looks like lots of fun!! And long and tedious :-/
Looks like you got everything covered... to me anyway. And yea what cooling do you have?

I really like the Book you're gonna go buy...can I have one too pL33Ze!?! I too wish to be able to OC my CPU 25% in 2.5% increments...is this the Tony Robbins "10 Steps to a New (cp)U !" program? damn, wish I had gone with that one first off...dumb 'ol me had to go with stuff like Garcia's "Just say NO2...One Step to "What CPU?", Fonda's "30 mhz Workout: Loose $500 a Day and watch those CPU's Melt Away!", and my current favorite from Martha, "The Intel Rotisserie: P4 to P3king Duck w/Prescott Glaze!"

er, guess I got sidetracked there...sorry. But aside from keeping your temps under control (how do you plan to do so?), I'm afraid your flowchart approach to reaching 4ghz is kinda like me planning out my next day fishing with a 10lbs Bass at stop 1, 680lbs Marlin by lunch, etc... case in point: I've yet to get my P4 3.2 to go any faster than 3216mhz, and I hit OC #10 loooong time ago ;)

Hope this helps, even if in my own sarcastic, kinda-asshol-ish way :)
Q

Are you actually gonna sit there and fill that spreadsheet out? I dont mean this offensively but LOL! If your wanting to try your luck at OC'ing to 4ghz, theres no point in walking up steps, just do it. It will either work or wont, be stable or unstable, no need to be THAT nerdish about it ;)

Hurry up and do it.. I want to know how that memory does before I purchase it :)

I agree with wee96. I think you are overanalyzing this just a bit too much. Voltages will be the last thing you want to touch. A majority of 630s can get to 3.7-3.8GHz at stock voltage and stock air cooling with no problems. From there its a crapshoot whether you can get to 4.0Ghz with air cooling. The other limiting factor is the mobo, But it sounds like you should have no problem there.

At 4.0Ghz with stock air cooling and AS5, my idle is 35C and at load is 60C. Not too bad, but definitely too warm for my liking.

When I booted for the first time my Intel 630 CPU is getting 1.42V Isnt that alot for default?!?!

Also what is the correct instal procedure?

Windows XP
SP2
Chipset
Drivers

Is that right?

I just installed the latest ATI driver. when I run a benchmark should I change any settings in the Catalyst control panel?
I want my score to compare with eveyrone else.

Im going to run 3dmark 2006.

whenever i run benchmarks i just turn off AA and AF... sometimes iw ill force V. sync off but i play with it on in my games so i usually dont do that

tell us what ya get :D

But is there a "standard" ? I just did fresh INstall and have not touched any settings. There are soo many new settings now because I have been out of the graphics scene for 6 months.

Not sure if there is a standard... I would think that everyone would adjust settings to yeild the highest benchmark... since it is a benchmark.

Maybe time to start another thread in the Video Card section :p

I don't want to bust your bubble too much, but just get Prime95 installed before and overclocking is done.

I applaud your very meticulous and methodical approach to overclocking, but if your going to test stability at each and every overclocking step it's going to take you at least 10 days and probably 15 days to find your max overclock. To tell you the truth, I'd rather start using the computer ASAP :p. Here's some tips to speed it up.

Usually, I relax memory timings to the slowest or whatever is most optimal for that memory. Then I bump up the fsb a lot until the machine doesn't post. Then I back off in 5mhz fsb increments until the machine will boot into windows and keep on backing off until prime95 runs for more than 4 iterations without erroring. Then it's a crap shot as to how much you want to further decrease the fsb by a bit more to get it to stabilize or if you want to bump up the voltage an increment. If you bump up the voltage, you can try upping the fsb until it isn't stable again. Make sure Prime95 can run for 24 hours before you start tweaking the other stuff such as running your memory at a 1:1 ratio or at a more tight timing. Oh yeah, and get a temp monitoring program on it, such as Asus PC Probe. Turn on the logging function for that program and make sure temps stay at a decent level. Doint it this way still takes me about a week to get the optimal overclock.

Good luck with the overclock.:) I have my 3.0C@4ghz and it runs great. :D

yea guys haha Im not testing each of those speeds. Right now im running stock and getting 52C while stress testing. Yea im using PC Probe right now.

been there done that on my 478 P4 3.06HT when up to 4GHz no problem. And yes the temp was high even on a watercooler!

At 3.6Ghz seems stable so far after running prime and some games.

Should I loosen the ram more and try to get more cpu or what?

What Should I do?

I have almost the exact same setup minus the memory here:

I'm also on air cooling (zalman 9500) no mods to the board. Granted it was topping out at 80*c during gaming that's still at 4.5ghz which wasn't 100% stable. But you should still be able to reach AT LEAST 4ghz. Have you tried turning memory all the way down and seeing how far the chip will go? Don't be afraid to give it some juice. I'd also suggest using speed step as it'll give you a lot more room to play with since you'll be at the 14x multi.

It's not 5ghz on air = ) That's just an error with asus booster not reading multi correctly

But it's still 4.5ghz! 322x14

Well guys I ran memtest86 tonight and I think 1 stick is bad. Im testing each stick now. But could 1 stick having errors keep my fsb from being stable past 242? I was running the ram at stock settings so I don't see how it could have kept my cpu from overclocking.

nevermind, the higest I can get it is still 242fsb 3.6ghz with standard ram timings. I ran memtest86 last night and got an error on one of my sticks so i think im going to send it back for some diffrent ram. Does anyone know if having a bad stick of ram can limit the overclock even if you are running the ram at rated speed?

I hope this is the case because no matter what I do I can not get past 242 fsb.

I got my 805D up to 3.6 no problem.. gonna bump it up more once I look into the cooling (it got up to 72C under load.. stressed it all night and no crashes or errors though..)

Umm.. whats the default voltage of the 805D?

ok, heres the thing, Once I go past 242fsb I hit save in the bios and my computer shuts off, then comes back on in about 5 secs then I can boot into windows. Once I am in windows If I get a stable reading on prime 95 does that mean my pc is stable at this speed?

Notice that whenever I "restart" my computer it will shut off then come back on but the settings will not reset they will stay the same.

Im at 4ghz running prime 95 right now.
Is this a valid overclock?

They don't reset, because you have a stable OC. If they reset, then it will say "OC failed, press F1 to enter BIOS or F2 to load setup defualts and continue" ect. What are your temps at 4GHz? And how much vcore you pumpin in?

@ Danith, stock is ~1.30v

Going a little off topic, but how is that Blue Orb by Thermatake? Im thinking of getting one, because its blue(goes with the lights and board in my case), and I can pick it up at my Radioshack(good job Thermatake and Radioshack).

Here is a screenshot of what I am running right now.
The highest temp I have seen at load is 64C.

WOOT! I think I made a mojor discovery today. I was afraid to set the voltage too high because at idle it is 1.52v which is kind of high but when I put a load on it, it drops to 1.45V

I ran 3 test each time with errors in prime 95 the first 4min, bumped the voltage 1 notch, ran again for 10mins without error, bumped voltage now going on 20 mins without prime95 error :D

Hope it stays like this

 failed after 24 mins. But I see a trend here. up 1 more notch.

[

ok... Im done for tonight. I'm going to leave the voltage at 1.4750V for the time being and run prime95 tonight.

Here is a current screen of my overclock. I am at 4ghz now :D wOOT! I'm just trying to get prime to be stable.

I went from 6mins, to 10mins, to 20mins to 1 hour 40 mins of being stable, each time upping the cpu voltage by 1 notch.

Now I am at 1.475V and have not ran prime yet. I hope it will stay stable at this voltage.

I get 41C idle and 61-63C Load it has gone up to 65C but it goes back down.

Cool good luck... 4.0 ghz stable ftw!! :D

man mid 60s is quite high but definitely still ok i suppose... have you ever considered watercooling?

I want to try and reseat the heatsink. I don't think it should be this high. I'm going to post some pics of my rig and show the airflow later tonight and see If I can get some opnions on what I should do.

i run at 4.1 ghz on a pentium d 930 big typhoon cooling till my new waterblock gets installed.
1.4v cpu core. 39C idle 58C dual prime. I would think a single core would be a breeze. anything faster on mine and 1 of the cores fails prime. p5wd2 mb as well. need to do a vdroop mod bad.

I have to run my vcore at 1.46V in the bios to keep prime stable for over an hour but the temp reaches 67C sometimes and stays around 63-65C at that voltage. I don't really want to raise it anymore because I am afraid I will damage the cpu but I don't know what else to do to get prime to be stable. After about an hour I get a "Hardware Failure" which I take it to mean that the cpu is getting to hot or it's not getting enough voltage.
(gets 1.54V idle and 1.45 under load)

I hate that my cpu takes so much voltage to run at 4ghz unlike most people's.
I am running my ram at stock so I know its not that thats giving me the error.

If I were to replace my Blue Orb II what is the best cooler besides water cooling?

I think I might drop it to 3.8Ghz and run like 1.43V and see If I can keep it stable at that.

im getting kind of scared. Im hitting 68, 69 C under load now

edit*** It stays around 67C on load. It ran Prime 95 for 2 hours 49 mins Im going to leave it at that for now and see how it runs games and programs.

I have not had a single crash or throttling yet.

I am running 3.75Ghz right now for 27\7 use at 1.45V 4ghz is fine for most games (BF2, Quake 4, UT2004) but has crashed a few times in windows when using ventrilo (althought it might be my craapy soundblaster driver)

and when I played TOCA3 with all the Starforce checking everything it crashes about 5 mins into the game.

I think 3.75 with overclocked x1800XT 685\795 will be fine for gaming untl newer games come out or I can get a better cooler and Power supply.

As for benchmarks. At 4ghz , ram @ 712Mhz , x1800xt at 680/794 I get

3dmark 2003 = 17944
3dmark 2006 = 4452
Quake 3 "Fast" = 418fps
Super PI 1MB = 31 secs

Does that seem about right?

However this is NOT 24\7 stable with all programs and games so I'm not going to leave it at this.

Today while running two Prime95's I took the side Case off and the temps went from 63-64C to 57-58C under load..

I dont understand why my case does not have good airflow.
