I am building a pc. I want to find a good 20 inch or larger moniter under $500 . I am putting a good tv tuner in and want to be able to play xbox 360 and gamecube on it and have it look good. Also how do set up hd if I wanted?
 
well if u want HD, i recommend sony fw900 24in crt. one of those puppies will go for $250-300 used with warantee. Getting HD is easy most new caed 7800gtx x1800xt have input for HDTV. If u want to get HDTV from air u might need an ATI HDTV turner, it comes with a small antena. I own the fw900 I can run max without costum setting 2048x1880 with my graph card.

Is this true HD? Will it look better than say a 2405. I am trying to decide betwen a fw900 and 2405. Also, where can you find one that cheap?
 
ok I have no idea what you guys mean. Any good lcd's for hd? Although that crt looks nice.

that is incorrect, or at least misleading. there is currently no way to pass uncompressed digital hd video from ur cable provider through your computer. within a year these solutions will exist... but not now.. ur stuck with over air hd... from ati, which has limited available programming.

there are no solution for hd tv tuners for cable TV for a pc.
 
Well in that pricerange its hard to recommend anything but a Dell 2005fpw.

Otherwise have a look around this forum, do some research, this way you're more likely to end up satisfied. Dell has at least two good ones in your pricerange (i think)
 
That new Gateway 21" LCD that supports HD Tv...
If you have Dish..then can't you just hook up that monitor to the dish network receiver box via S-video and get HD Tv?

Svideo won't carry a high definition/high rez signal, it's still leaps better than rca composite but still

To carry a high definition signal you'd need either:

hdmi/dvi > vga > component

What kind of solutions are these? A videocard that has HD Video In?

Yes, you can hookup your Dish directly to your Gateway provided you use DVI or Component cables.

The Gateway will support any resolution up to 1080i and has the DCDi technology by Faroudja.
 
lets clear up a couple of things

- hd singal is normally carried over component cables and pretty much nothing else. (i'm not too sure about hdmi)
- you can only watch over the air hd w/ a tuner right now. computer tuners on the market cant tune into cable hd channels.
- the fw900 will most likely provide you with the best image quality and it has a nice price. the color reproduction is second to none. the 2405fpw/2005fpw has crappier color reproduction compared to high end crts

also the 2005fpw doesn't have component input, so you'll have to use the vga cable for the 360
 
pretty sure the dbv fta cards pick up hd satelite signals and display them on your pc, but i hear it takes a decent to high end pc to decode the hd signals without freezing your pc.

how much is sattelite hd? over in my area. satellite is like $80/month and u pay like almost $1000 for equipment and installation. i don't think its realy worth it
 
well i dunno if its against the rules to talk about it, but i got a dvb card ($60)
a used dish 500 ($50)
and i can descramble every dish network channel, all ppv porn movies sport passs everything, all hd
all free ;P
and you can get other satelites too you just need to use additional dishes to point at the satelites
just dish network alone is like amillion channels
 
k. theres prob 30 hd channels right now, but when your pc is decoding the hd signal it will run like 100%. you need like a 3.2 or better to decode it smoothly. then you can save tv shows onto your hd, or burn directly to dvd like a dvr.

- HD signal can be transmitted over Component (RGB), DVI (digital), HDMI (digital video+audio), and VGA.

- You can output from your HD cable box/satellite receiver to any input card supporting the above connections

- The FW900, while a nice CRT, is ginormous - be sure you have the space for it

- i was talking about actual tuners and not other solutions for watching/recording hdtv on ur computer

-yes we kno crts are huge
