The Hanging Garden

Ok, a bit more done today.

I got the basics of cabling down by making a little cable. It looks ugly, but works. When I do the connections, this should help.

A little word of advice. When you start tearing into walls, be prepared for all sorts of suprizes. I found the place where I want to mount my connections and measured off a landmark, in this case, from the electrical outlet. Drilled into the wall with a spade bit to start it out.

First try and I found the stud. Moved a bit and drilled a hole, then used my dremel with a cutting bit and opened a hole big enough to fit my drill inside. Drilled down until I found the floor joist (I'm getting good at this...), then moved a bit until I drilled through the floorboard. Had to be careful otherwise I'd drill through my neighbor's wall (I live in a row-style house.)

Old plasterboard. This stuff is 1" thick, and made a hell of a mess.

Took my measurement from upstairs and marked off the same distance in the basement. Drilled up at an angle and luckily (After hitting a nail on the first try.) both sides met (File under: blind luck ;) ) I repeated the same in the dining room, a little wiser from my first attempt.

A quick broom and later started feeding cable.

I ran 2 Cat5 and one Cat3 for phone into the hole. I left about 6-12" in the holes to feed into the box for my connections. The slack will be secured with clips later and cleaned up for length.

From the living room, I drilled through the floor joists and fed the cable until it came across near the Garden. I managed to give my drill a workout, the batteries are in intensive care pending a full recovery. From the dining room, I was able to run it around the perimeter and use the 'soffit' around the I-beam as a path, running it behind where the switch will be. The phone line I continued to it's point. I got lucky with that route.

Two runs of cat5 and one phone for each location downstairs. I figure when I make my connections, if something goes wrong I can correct it with the extra hanging down, or lose it and run another wire. Both are taped with location so I don't forget.

I hope getting the runs upstairs will be not too much work. The easiest way is to run beside the heating duct, but I'm gonna have to do some exploratory surgery to figure my path. I managed to aggrivate my shoulder while drilling, so I'll give it a few days to rest while I plan (Anyone seen my bottle of Aleve??).

Yeah, it takes a while to get the hang of it, but just leave extra cable and then you can always cut off your mistake and try again!

 
I run cable semi-professionally. Here are a few tips.

1. Go to you local home improvement store and buy about 20ft. of sash chain. It comes in very handy for dropping wire from one floor to another. It will cascade over obsticles quite nicely.

2. Instead of "exploring" with your paddle bit, get a wire hanger, cut off the straight piece (bottom) and leave one end of it with a sharp edge. Place the wire hanger in your drill chuck and tighten it down good. I call this my "finder" bit. It makes a much smaller hole and takes not nearly as much elbow grease. Make the hanger bit about 15 inches long if you can. Make sure it is straight!

3. If you run cable in the heater/AC ducts, make sure you get plenum cat5. It will stand up the heat and cold much better and you won't be replacing the wires in 5 years.

4. Stay away from fluorescent lights!

This is making me want to finish running Cat5 to all the rooms in my house. Kinda off-topic, but does anyone know what to do with a 48-port patch panel? I snagged it when it got (seemingly needlessly--it's perfectly fine) replaced in the office.

What I meant is this: a 48-port patch panel isn't particularly useful in our 1500-sq-ft. house, since I only have a 4-port router/switch in the first place (putting six ethernet ports in each room isn't a problem for me:)). I guesss I could sell it on eBay...

Try this. Quite a good guide from the ground up IMO.

As for what to do with a 48-port patch panel, I'd say just use a little bit. You'll probably end up expanding at some point, and I don't think they make 4-port patch panels :p I don't think they cost all that much, either - I saw someone selling them for $15 on FSFT.

I never really paid attention to this, but I think I may have figured out how to do the vertical run. I noticed next to the duct the wire that goes upstairs for my telephone. It goes upstairs and emerges thru the baseboard. It looks like that piece of blocking was added in later after the ducts were run to close it in.

I'm guessing that area up there may be 'hollow'. If so, I plan to run my cable parallel to the duct and put a box in between the duct and the door. I will know for sure once I remove the blocking and take a look up there.

As long as there are no obstacles, and I keep it away from the duct, I should be fine. Since I want to get it into the other bedroom, logically I would run it up to the attic and drop down, but I don't have access to that (The way these places were built.). I figure I can make than an 'access point' and figure how to run cable to the other bedroom.

First time doing a cable run, so I'm learning as I go. Does this kinda make sense, or am I trying to pull teeth through the armpit?

 
I am assuming that the vent in the second pic is what the ductwork in the first pic leads to.

If that assumption is correct, then I would say to cut your hole for the box slightly to the left of the duct, but only 12 or so inches from the floor. If you got the sash chain that I suggested you can drop it down and it should hit the bottom near that little block you want to remove in the basement. This only happens if the floors do not extend under the walls. If they do....

Pry the small part of floor trim off the wall and make a hole there behind it in the drywall were you can drill with the paddle bit to allow access to the lower area inside the wall. Once you are done, you can re-attach the floor trim and the hole will be covered. That way, SWMBO will be happy and so will you.

Make sense?
 
Heh, that's nothing, that's only 2 sheets of drywall. I once ran wire for a fire alarm system in a restaurant where they had used *four*. I just got myself a nice Forstner bit and made big holes above the ceiling and behind the devices where we mounted them.

At our one server center we ran the walls with 4 walls with 2 sheets each :) Firewalls :D Those walls would last for hours if there was a fire in the building.

Sorry guys, took a few days off to let my shoulder get better. Got a little more done in one place but stuck in another, will start posting again hopefully tonight.

 
Spent the last few days resting and thinking about how to mount the outlets. Kinda hard to really go at it when you only have a few hours a night to work at it, but I tried to keep doing a little bit at least.

I squared up the holes and measured the drywall to fit.

The old wallboard is 1" thick, and the greenboard is 1/2" so I need to make them line up. I cut two strips which I will double up and screw into the wall so they sit flush.

I got a remodeler's box and will use that in the opening. Once installed, just screw the sides and the tabs will collapse and hold it to the wall. Cable will be fed through the knockouts

Now here is where I'm stuck for the moment. I cut a hole to see what I'm dealing with. If you stick your finger in and reach to the left, you hit a stud about 1/2" over. Move to the right, and you hit the duct, so I figure It's gonna be tight. I got some sash chain like Moose suggested and fed it down, but didn't see it come down. I'm hitting some obstacle in the wall, but can't figure out what. I have a friend coming over this weekend to help pull the cables, so I figure it's best to wait before I tear more into the walls and work more on the other outlets...

You are probably hitting the floor. Did you removed the baseboard and take a look yet?
 
That's planned for the weekend. I peeked in there best I can and saw more blocking but can't tell exactly where so I guess I have more surgery. I just wish I didn't have to open up more of the wall than I wanted. The other parts were simple, just got to put the pieces back in.

Just remove the base board, make a small hole to peek into...then once the baseboard is back up, no more hole!

Sorry I didn't clarify in my earlier post. I did peek in there and there is no 'floor' (I pried the baseboard back a bit as you suggested, and the floor extends about an inch behind the baseboard then ends.) There is a drop where there appears to be more blocking down the hole sealing access.

I have to cut a big enough hole to get access and see what I'm dealing with, and that's a job I can only do on the weekend. My condo is a 'row' style unit and I have neighbors on either side of me. I don't think they'd be happy with me doing 'demolition' in the late evening as they have young kids. Not happy about this, I wanted to be further along...

One piece of good news, I lost the cad file of the trays, but my guy had the hardcopy I sent him. I scanned it, and have it for later use. Plus I have a nice addition for the garden coming next week from him.

The last few weeks have been rough (Crappy job, family matters, etc.) and I've been wiped out. I did little things to keep it going. Sorry about the lag.

Tried running the cables up next to the duct, but when they build my place, they boxed it in pretty tight. There was no way I could get any tools (Let alone hands) in there to do really anything. This dead ends running cables up this way, and leaves me with a nice size hole to square up and patch - not good.

So I figured since I ran cables to the dining room, I should be able to run to the second bedroom. Stuck my head in there and saw it was a straight shot up. So two more holes in the wall, and drill through a sill plate later...

Problem solved. Figured I'd leave the master bedroom alone, kinda a Feng Shui thing.

With all the cables ran, time to connect them up. Each outlet (Dining room, living room, and bedroom 2) has 2 Cat5e and one Cat3 for phone terminated with Quickport jacks.

Plugged the Cat5 and tested each one to see if all was well. Also marked them for later.

Moved two of the boxen down to their new home. They are connected to the bed2 runs back to the switch via patch cables for now, until I move everything downstairs.

Spending the next few days cleaning things up and learning how to mud & tape the holes in the wall and not make it look like ass.

Oh, before I forget, I found a guy on Ebay selling these rack screws. They look interesting, and may make life easier when mounting stuff. Thought you guys might find this cool...

I just went to Home Depot and got a 10-pack of the Leviton Quickport Cat5 jacks for about $30. They come with the jacks, caps, and a plastic punch down tool.

(Sorry for crappy cam pics) They are marked with both the layouts for the 586 "A" and "B" standards. For my cables, I used the "B" standard (Colors on the top.)

I stripped about 2-3" of the sheath off and untwisted the wires and laid them out to match the colors and punched them down. I trimmed the excess flush with a razor blade and capped them.

For the plugs on my connection, I used this guide to walk me through it.

If you don't have a cable tester, I found something that works just as well. Connect the plug end to a computer and the jack end to a switch using a patch cable. If the link light goes on you wired everything right, otherwise cut off the head and try again. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it.

Good luck with your wire job.

 
ok. I just got crappy keystones then. Guess I am off to get the good ones.

You can wire them straight through....it really doesn't matter, as long as the connections are the same on both ends.

There are times you can get a false reading. I had to rewire several hundred rooms in a local motel for our company. We used a laptop to check the cabling in the room and several rooms would show a link light, but would not pass traffic. If you have a multi-meter you can create a simple network test. All you need is a loopback plug on one end and a rj45 plug with stripped wires on the other. Just test for opens and shorts on 1,2,3 and 6.

 
Getting a cable tester is probably worth it--the one I have (came in a compgeeks.com kit with crimpers/connectors/cable) will tell you about all four pairs very quickly and easily. It's simple as heck, but works just great.
