The Hanging Garden

Noted for the future.

I don't have a tester and used the switch as a 'quick n dirty' test and everything worked. I'm new to the cable thing and learning as I go.

Ebay is also a good place to pick up a cable tester. I even found one with a tone generator.

Moose, I won a bet with my ISP sysadmin on that one. You'd lose.

The colors don't matter, but the *pairs* do. We have a 24-port 75' run in the server room that I had to wire up (access to server / switch / PIX / whatever), and to test the theory T* has, I let him punch a port down randomly, but exactly the same on both ends of the run. The $45 tester showed all right with the world. The company sysadmin's $650 TDR tester called it a piece of crap, below 5mb/sec for throughput and error-riddled to boot.

Twisted-pair Ethernet relies on signal difference in the pairs to transmit and receive. If you mix across pairs, the crosstalk between individual wires drowns out the difference.

It was a cheap lunch, but it was free. :D

The pairs are very important in ethernet, there is a reason for the orange pair and green pair to be on pins 1,2,3,&6. If it is a short cable (less than 3ft), then yes it may not matter in a short run. If you strip a long piece of the outer shell on CAT5, you will notice that each pair has a different amount of twist per foot in it, which aid in eliminating cross-talk.

A little more done, now in the home stretch...

Spent the last few days getting everything buttoned up and secured. The touch up work will be later. All outlets working except phone, that will be solved soon.

I got two final things to do then the garden will be complete. I wanted to make the fronts nice instead of looking at the guts, so I went back to the guy who made the trays for me and he did this.

Measured to fit the trays from the original drawing. They will fill the open spaced as well as cover the tray fronts. I'm finishing up the paint job on them then they get hung into service on Wednesday.

And the last issue is an important one. Previously I used the phone jack in my bedroom to connect my DSL and machines to the world. With everything going down to the basement, I need to run service and connect the new leads and tackle this quality Ma Bell hackjob courtesy of a previous owner.

The way this place was wired, I only have 1 pair of wires supplying my phone. Plus the wire is old and if you look at it wrong will snap off.

I plan to use a new terminator block and a Leviton bridged telephone module to connect all the lines in a neat and somewhat orderly fashion. I mounted the bridge on one of the filler plates using spare standoffs from the trays.

Nice work man. I think the value of your house just went up with all your computers you are adding. If you ever sell you should box in the walls to the computers so they do not know they are there then biuld a new farm

Well, the paint didn't exactly work out the first time so an extra coat of paint got them nice. This should make the fronts look nice and purdy.

Something interesting is the Gruber tray front flange is thicker than the ones I got from my guy. They fit pretty close, but cause the fronts to bulge in a few spots.

I was thinking for later to drill some holes in them for an LED or two, yes, no, maybe so?
