Nowadays writing exploits and software to assist in spreading malicious code can be a very lucrative business.

It's something out of a Mario Puzo novel, interpreted by Neal Stephenson. Criminals, presumably operating out of Russia, hire qualified programmers to create exploits for recently patched vulnerabilities not just in Microsoft Windows, but in applications such as Apple QuickTime as well. The criminals then sell this package of exploits as a tool to others who then install the necessary code on servers around the world.

Has been for quite a while. I first became aware of it a couple years ago when I was diagnosing a PC problem for a relative. Came to find out that she had two competing malware packages on it. One or the other and she wouldn't have had an issue; These things were damn sneaky. But they were both designed to short the other out, which is where the system problems came from.

If they were pulling this shit a couple years ago, it was already big then. Now a days, it's got to be huge. I hear the stuff they are writing now is literally state of the art; Buggy as shit, but the concepts they are deploying are just amazing.

Hmm since the normal Mafia drives black Mercedes' and this is the new age hacker mafia's... do they drive bright colored Smart Cars? :D

This is quite funny. Since they call them the Mafia, I wonder if they use violence or force to get what they need for exploits and such?
