I am attempting to crack what I view as the myth of PC DDR Ram.

I have put together the following system:

ASUS A78NX
Barton 2500 (I plan on OC to 3200+)
Radeon 9800pro
SLK 947 Heatsink + Thermaltake Cool FAN
SATA hard drive

I have my eye on GEIL Golden Dragon - but the more I look into the issue, the more confused I get. First of all, if someone could explain the RAM timings and what they are all about, I would appreciate it.

Secondly, is it really important to have RAM that has the LOWEST possible RAM timings to perform a standard overclock of the Barton from 2500 to 3200 speeds? I was planning on getting 3200 RAM, and the golden dragon Ram is supposed to be good, but apparently it is not the BEST. Any advice is appreciated.

Hrmmm, I know when I visited this board I saw two Stickies...Oh yes yes...

When on the General [H]ardware Board, the FIRST TWO threads you see are stickies...1 Is the Memory FAQ, READ IT first, ask questions that have already been answered later (never)...Then read the Tweak FAQ...Simple eh?

BTW, OC'ing but don't know about RAM timings, hrmmm...that could be trouble...I understand the way to learn is to do, but you gotta still know the background inf...

Dub - Thanks for the completely unhelpful response.

While you are right, I did overlook the Ram Sticky - there is no reason to be sarcastic about it.

Also - I know way more about hardware and overclocking than I am letting on - I am trying to ask a few leading questions to get peoples opinions based on a wide pool of experiences.

Lets get over ourselves here, this is not brain surgery - overclocking these days is a simple matter of changing settings in a BIOS that has been designed for overclocking. Now a days, even a monkey could overclock these Barton chips with the avg NFORCE 2 MOBO.

Now getting back to my Ram question.... Do I really need the super high performance ram with the lowest possible timings to achieve a super stable overclock of the barton 2500 to 3200 speeds?
I would really like to hear some people's experience with different brands of RAM doing this standard Barton OVerclock.

Any help (not sarcasm) is appreciated.

come now, it was rather a big overlooking on your part to not see the stickies....but all is forgiven :)

as for your questions about RAM, i strongly suggest going to www.anandtech.com and clicking on their "Memory" tab at the top, it links you to an AMAZING wealth of information and RAM reviews, with explanations of how different speed RAMs with different timings stack up against eachother, and how far the RAM will overclock

i hope that helps ^_^

speed can be important but it depends on so many factors. The cpu itself, motherboard, quality of the ram etc.

From my expierience most bottlenecks come from the cpu itself.

Row Access Strobe (ras) and Column Access Strobe (cas) Work a little bit like a librarian looking for a book, the faster tha librarian can get a book the better.

Yes its important. To an extent. The speed of ram is going to depend on the batch, the type of chips, but generally most decent ram will do nicely for a nice overclock. Sometimes crap ram can go pretty good, sometimes good ram overclocks like crap. Any many times people pay for the name and not the chips themselves.

Sounds as if I upset you, I have no idea why, it was a simple matter of reading and paying attention, general rule, with such an obvious question, there is bound to be a hundred threads about it, which leads to a sticky...All I asked is that you take a look around before just going on and posting...

I'm not being full of myself (I dunno where you got that from), I'm simply stated how it is, you say a monkey can overclock, well a lot of monkeys must be smarter than humans because all you need to do is take a look at any enthusiasts Webboard to see all of the problems folks have overclocking...

Calm down my friend, you're the one asking the questions...not me...;)
