The First Berserker: Khazan

Finally took out the final boss, took me probably 6 hours of going at him non-stop, what a pain. I was really tempted to give up, I only got him to his final phase twice, and the second time I took him out. I'll have all achievements once I start the next journey, ended the game at level 151 at 72 hours, and at normal difficulty (bit of a misnomer there, it's hard af) and no summons. I'm missing a few phantom relics so I'll probably clean that up first, but looking forward to NG+!

so where does it rank for you among the Souls-like games?

Well my favorites are definitely this, LoP, and BM:W, and they're all very close, but LoP is probably still my favorite. The art style, environments, and enemy design are so good, I just love the overall vibe. The combat is also great in LoP. The only thing I can think of about LoP that I'm not a fan of is the handle/blade mechanic, and a lot of people like that. I seriously hope we see more dark Souls-likes inspired by classic tales like Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.

BM:W would probably hold the top spot for me if it had more build variety, there's a lot of staffs that don't change much and only 2 spears, it does tend to be a bit button mashy as well. However, even though I don't play these games for story, BM:W is the best in that regard. I never skip cutscenes or dialogue in that one, the character design and voicing are top tier. I also think chapter 5 is too short and generally don't care for the final chapter, though the Mantis boss is one of my favorites.

FB:K ranks up there with them with how fun the combat is, it's flashy but it feels great. The boss battles truly feel like dances. Even though there are only 3 weapon types there's a lot of build variety with the skill tree and the armor set bonuses. I also really like how you can repeat boss fights, which there's incentive for as they drop materials for armor sets, love that. It's honestly more similar to Nioh, which is funny as I just wasn't into after getting probably 75% of the way through. It's mission based and bonus missions reuse areas from main missions, though with changes. On paper this would deter me but I really enjoy the bonus missions. It also has a similar loot system, though it's far less tedious. I think FB:K is the hardest of the 3 by a decent margin, not as hard as Sekiro for me but a lot of people make that comparison. One thing to consider, if I do 3 runs like I plan to, one for each weapon type, I expect I'll have more time in this one than the other two. Maybe that'll be the metric that puts it on top.

I've completed a couple others, Enotria: The Last Song is one of them and I personally think it doesn't get the credit it deserves, though I don't place it at the top. I think the level design in Enotria is the most similar to actual Souls titles, it really shines in many areas, though not in others. Lords of the Fallen (2023) is another, and there were things I liked about it but I hated the gimmicky boss fights, which ultimately killed it for me, also never liked the umbral mechanic. I've fired up a few others like Surge, Mortal Shell, Bleak Faith, and even Jedi Fallen order but couldn't get into any of those. Remnant/Remnant 2 are awesome but are too different to compare.

So yeah, it's honestly too hard to rank my top 3, if you're into any of those, play the rest.

I switched to dual wield for NG+ using the Bloodthirsty Fiend set and wow, I'm just melting every boss. No need to practice guard timing or learn the dance in any way really, just pop phantom bloody sword dance and Gale: doom, then whirlwind over and over (or any skill of your choosing, only other one I use is Ruthless), and just watch the health bar disappear. This setup must be broken, absolutely trivializes all of the bosses so far.
