I'm warning you, this can become an expensive project, I made one and it wasnt that great, it DOES work tho... This is definately a serious "hackers only" kinda project.... may i recommend you not bother with video input based panels and go straight for the "overhead projector" lcd panels... -FLECOM
Q: Is there any way to make a stand-alone LCD, one not connected to my computer?
A: Yes, there is. psylence made a very cool setup he calls the DPMS, or Digital Power Management System. You can find a article on it over at his website here.
Q: How can I put keys on a display?
LCDriver v2.0, which is still in beta, offers several ways:
* It supports the built-in keypads on Matrix Orbital and Seetron serial displays.
* You can add two pushbuttons to CrystalFontz serial displays and serial conversion boards (aka backpacks) by modifying the serial cable.
* You can wire five pushbuttons into parallel displays wired directly to a parallel port.
LCDriver v2 passes on keypresses to the program currently on the screen (it supports multiple programs running at once) - it can also be configured to intercept one or more keys to rotate between programs.
also if you have a Matrix Orbital Display you can use LCDC here costs money
