I am in the market for a new moniter for my new rig. I am leaning toward a crt because of all the ghosting, dead pixel, bleeding problems lcd moniters seem to have. I will most likely use a 7800 gtx. I dont want to upgrade for a few years. I was looking at the fw900 but I would rather have the moniter not be widescreen. Any suggestions for big crt moniters with a good rep, nice color, ect?

-Dont want to pay too much either...

A good CRT and you don't want to pay much?

I'm using a Sony Trinitron 21" that I paid $700 for several years ago. I like it, but I'd rather have a 20" LCD.

I see you're in MI. Where? My company gets rid of old 21" Dell's (Trinitron tubes, dual inputs) for cheap...Yes, we are disposing of our 21s in favor of 19" LCDs...and we're not a small company :)
 
I live in Rochester Michigan. When I said don't want to pay too much I meant like an insane amount. I will pay for quality.

If you dont want widescreen I'd go with the Sony G520P as well (specs here), I own one and it has a superb picture, plus it has a Dynamic brightness mode which works great for gaming & movies by boosting contrast (also known as superbrite mode on other monitors) ,It's to bad the FW900 doesnt have this feature.
 
I picked up a Sony GDM-F500 for 70 bucks from a local computer recycler and it's in perfect condition. It's 21 inch trinitron, .22 pitch!!! and has dual vga/bnc inputs as well as HD input. The .22mm pitch is really amazing though, text looks almost as good as a really nice LCD. And, its trinitron, colors, brightness and contrast look great.

I'd still consider the FW900 even though it's widescreen, unless you found what you are looking for already... $70 locally is real nice for a 21" trinitron. Anyways my point was just some are too scared of widescreen. I can't think of one game I've played lately that didnt have an aqequate(to me anyways) hack if it didn't support WS already. Maybe I'm just not that picky.

FEAR: Config file edit: FOV etc. Perfect
NFSMW: Little applet hack: Some FOV from top and bottom cropped, no stretching.
BF2: Shortcut target edit: Some FOV from top and bottom cropped, no stretching.

Some people get irked by the results like BF2, but I don't think you'd know if someone didn't tell you that your vertical FOV was a smidge lower than others. I think it bothers some because they feel half the point of widescreen is increased FOV I guess. To me it's slightly more important why WS took off in the first place. It simply fits your field of vision better. I can move closer to the monitor until it fills my actual field of vision better. I just dont yearn for the ol' 4:3 anymore. You end up with empty peripheral vision or you move it real close and then have to pan your eyes up and down. A 16:10 big monitor about a foot and a half to two feet from my face is perfect. Wider is better! :D

If the hax out there made me put up with fat guys or were inadequate and pissed me off enough to rather deal with side black bars, I might feel differently.
 
Dell Sony Trinitron P1110 CRT, I have 2 of them and they work great. I got one refurbished for like $250 a while ago and another for $150 used from a business. They work great, and have a great picture.
 
How about a Mitsubushi Diamond Pro 930SB 19 inch CRT....I have one for sale, perfect condition. It's about 2 years old. I just got a 19 inch LCD, that's the only reason I am getting rid of it. One of the best 19 inch CRT's ever made...
 
My brother has a Viewsonic G90f (19") CRT and it looks great. He has been very happy with it and it was around $230 at Newegg.
 
I would say look for the HP P1130 (Sony Trinitron) 20" monitors. I found two used monitors in the classifieds on craigslist for 100 bucks apiece.

They will do 1600x1200 at 100 hz refresh rock solid. Beautiful monitors and there are a bunch of used ones out there that people are getting rid of now that they are going lcd.
 
1600x1200 @ 100Hz... really? Didnt know they got it that high. The P1110's do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz. Anyways that is probably a good monitor too... trinitrons look great and last a long time.
 
My friend gave me his old Filips CRT 24"!!! Its an absolute beast! Gaming just down right owns!

The only draw back is that it weights like half of me lol
 
can anyone with a CRT comment on how the VGA adapter cable displays on the xbox360? some with LCDS have said colors were washed out, but i haven't heard from any CRT users yet
 
I think the biggest CRT (that isnt widescreen) is the NEC 22" or something. That thing is a beast, my dell CRT weighs like 70 pounds as it is haha.
 
Ok, here is a question. I have an NEC Fe950 that needs to be refurbished. The r556 capacitor blew or something, killing the horizontal align. Would i be better off sending this to nec for refurbish, or would buying a samsung 1100DF for $450 new? I understand the samsung has a shadowmask grille, which isn't as good as the NEC's aperature mask, grill(sony trinitronFD tube i beleive).

I absolutely loved how the nec looked. Super crisp. Hell, i payed nearly $500 for this thing new, and it worked for just about three years when it crapped on me. I guess there was a problem with these monitors...

What would you guys suggest in this situation? I'm erring on the side of the samsung 1100DF at the moment, just because it'd be a new unit, apposed to a refurb...

That is a good price, the specs he lists for it are incorrect (they're actually a tad better). It's also a popular choice, dell, HP, compaq, sony and IBM all carry the P1130 but some give it a different name.

Oh yea, most if not all 22" crt's are still only 20" viewable ;), there are benefits to that method though (the center of the tubes are sharper and clearer).

OP if you're serious then i'd recommend some patient research as there have been some good crt threads in the past few months, just takes a little digging. You would also find more deal linkage while you're at it.
 
The G520P really sounds like the best non-widescreen option to me, although you should note that the FW900 *still* has as much vertical space, so even if you run games at 4:3 with black bars on the side they're still as big, and you get widescreen desktop which is really handy.
