I know there is a forum for CPU discussion but I think this request a bit more unique. I was thinking about building a new gaming system in the near future that would also fold. The catch is this system needs to run fairly cool and quiet especially since F@H would keep it pretty warm. Water cooling is an option but heat still needs to be dissipated. The best solution for that seems to be using a CPU that doesn't produce as much heat. Which of the current/recent crop of CPUs would best this situation?
 
Pentium M. Very expensive for the clock speed, but they accomplish more per instruction. Might look at this - I know I want one :D

 
I've heard the more recent Semprons run pretty cool. And that AMD chips generally can be undervolted to make them run even cooler. And they're very inexpensive.

 
I've seen that site. It is a good one. I do like the Pentium M. My Dell 9300 laptop has the 1.73GHz PentM and running 2) F@H it tops out at 108 degrees. We keep the ambient temps 68-70 year round. Let's add a twist to this discussion. Consider the mainstream Intel and AMD procs . . . which ones seem to run cooler by deisgn?

That would be AMD all the way. Semprons run the coolest, but have the worst performance. If you're going for points per watt, it'll be awful hard to beat an X2.

 
The P-Ms rock if only MBs for them were reasonably priced. I believe an even cheaper option is the Celeron version of the P-M which are supposed to OC well and are dirt cheap compared to P-Ms but they have the same issue about motherboard price.

Once X2s or Opty 165s drop to $250 I'll pick up a pair for my S939 boards.
