I've been speaking to the mods, and with the push in the last few years regarding gaming under Linux, I've decided that perhaps it's time the the Linux sub forum had it's own thread related to Linux gaming. Both native and Wine based, Steam, Gog.com and open sourced, AMD, Intel and Nvidia driven using everything from DX wrappers through to OGL and Vulkan API's - Open source and closed.

I've asked the mods if we can make this thread a sticky and Paul_Johnson doesn't have an issue with doing so.

Feel free to post the latest titles you're playing, including any relevant screenshots as well as hardware used and performance statistics.

Tips and tricks related to Linux gaming are also welcomed, think of this as the one stop central location for all things gaming related under Linux.

This is not a place for Windows vs Linux flaming and I've been told by the mods that I have their support if discussion goes unnecessarily astray - Discuss like adults and be mindful of not only the thread topic, but the sub forum you're posting in.

As a start, I'd like to post some screenshots of the latest game I'm playing, Mad Max. I'm playing this under Ubuntu MATE 16.04 using Nvidia 384.59 drivers on a system consisting of an Intel Xeon X5675@stock with 24GB of ram and an ageing GTX670 FTW graphics card with dual 60Hz 1080p monitors. Considering the graphics card used, performance on my 60Hz display is fantastic with ~70 - 85 fps on high settings using the Vulkan API.

As far as gameplay is concerned, I love this game! The atmosphere coupled with impressive graphics and single player gameplay is just wonderful, and this is coming from someone that was not only purely an online FPS gamer in the past, but an individual that always hated games based around movies! Being Australian myself I love the in game attempt at an Australian accent, and the XA Falcon coupe - Even though it's still early days for me and my car looks like a POS!

The Xbox controller works perfectly with this game and it's actually the way I prefer playing it.

At $19.99 US dollars I say totally recommended!

Great thread!

Are you on the Vulkan beta? With a GTX 1060 or 1070 my framerates improved massively. If you haven't tried the vulkan binary for Mad Max, you should give it a go. Appears I was cpu limited with OpenGL on an i7-4770k (stock speeds). Whoda thunkit?

Yep, currently running the Vulkan beta and speeds are fantastic even on my old GTX 670FTW. Looking to upgrade to a GTX 1060 next now that they're back in stock after the miners stripped the shelves bare.

I was playing Shadow of Mordor on Linux for a while until i was getting framerates reduced down to high 20's in some scenes (GTX 1070 -- even though my benchmarks showed > 180 avg....) and ended up moving back to my windows box to play on 1070 SLI where the problem didn't exist. I think it's a bit late for Mordor to be optimized, but one can hope....

I have heard that about Shadow of Mordor, it's not a terribly well optimised game as far as I can tell. If any title could benefit from a porting to Vulkan, that's most likely the one!

Here's another game I'm currently enjoying called 'Blaze Rush'.

As can be seen, it's a Micro Machines type game but with better vehicles and more difficult game play due to controls that change orientation depending on one's location within the track. There's the usual power ups as well as nitro and weapons and a handy feature that gives you a little boost should you crash or run off the track, helping you catch up and remain somewhat competitive.

The game runs fine with the Xbox controller and FPS are stupidly high at even maximum settings using my ageing GTX 670FTW, as can be assumed considering the nature of the game. There's various multiplayer modes, including online server play, party play and the ability to host your own server - As yet I haven't tried multiplayer, so I'll be sure to keep you all updated.

For $9.99US on Steam, I recommend it for anyone that enjoys this genre of game.

Sorry I can't get more action shots, the screenshot function seems inoperative while I'm actually playing a game.

Its in my library... it would be nice if it got a vulcan patch. I guess there is a slim hope that Shadow of War may get vulcan, its shipping with DX 11... and based on the listed req seems to me is likely the same engine. So perhaps improvements for the newer title may trickle down to the older title as well. Shadow of War is getting a ios and android version at launch so who knows perhaps their is a small bit of hope they have done some vulcan work already. We can hope I guess... have to point this out as well even though its not really related the recommended system requirements for Shadow of War list CPU: AMD FX-8350, 4.0 GHz / Intel Core i7-3770, 3.4 GHz. FX-8350 I know odd, expected we would start seeing Ryzen mentioned at least in recommended specs for games hitting this fall. :)

I've been playing Darkest Dungeon a bit here and there. Just started a new game because I got my ass handed to me, actually. So far it's worked well from the couch with the Steam Link + Steam Controller

Darkest Dungeon looks cool. I love that the first handful of steam reviews are thumbs down, then you read them and they all say great game bit its a RPG with actual RNG and its hard. Sounds like it might be one to try out... I have a backlog but if I see it hit a nice steam sale I'll have to try it out.

I snagged a copy over the Steam summer sale. The art style is what really sold me on it. So far those reviews are seemingly accurate. I've screamed at my adventurers to "PLEASE HIT THE DAMN TARGET!", but the RNG had other plans. Just makes it satisfying whenever they do smash face though. :D
I've had a smile the whole time, but could see where it might not be for everyone. I must also admit that I don't quite know what I'm doing just yet. I recommend giving it a look, but waiting for a sale unless you're just starved for something to play. There should be some people playing it on twitch, if you want a better idea of what you're in for.

I'm still very green at Mad Max, you wouldn't believe how long it took me to work out how to bring down a guard tower using the harpoon!

Mad Max and Mordor are on my backlog but i'm waiting until I can upgrade my GPU before playing them. At the moment I am playing This is the Police. It has actually really surprised me at how interesting it is. I really only got it because you play a corrupt police chief Jack Boyd and my last name is Boyd so I got a kick out of that. It's a well done managerial simulation though and honestly some times a very depressing realistic look at what some LEO departments have to put up with.

Here are some linux games on sale now.

I'm looking to pick up:

Maybe this:

I have (oldies but goodies):

Trine bundle: http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/721/Trinelogy/

Love this game:

Possibly thinking to pick these up for my 5yo...

Or maybe the FE collection (not sure if all appropriate for my kid...he gets scared easily):

Just a quick post letting everyone know that Serious Sam runs awesome under Vulkan, not a single issue and at fairly high settings. Running a GTX670 FTW and a Xeon X5676 @ stock I get between 60 - 80fps with no dropped frames or issues whatsoever.

Overall a great classic, the level with the spider like creatures had me fairly anxious as the spiders we get here in Australia aren't very cuddly. Sorry about the full desktop screenshots, Steam's screenshot function wouldn't work on all images.

Here are some new ones that look good on sale -- let me know your opinions if you've played them:

Some of these games are looking very interesting, but I need new tyres for the bloody car! Curse 220kw's through two front wheels.

I've just started Saints Row III last night on Linux. It is fantastic....It's on sale as well. Seeing 40-50fps on a GTX 680 at 1080p with all details on.

It's good to see others comment on performance using older hardware, when the time comes for me to upgrade to Pascal I'm gonna be loving it!

Yeah I figured I'd see how it would do since the 7 or so better cards I have are all mining...

I can swap my 980Ti in there, and do at times for the sake of curiosity. But honestly, at 1080p this 670FTW (pretty much a 680) does pretty well. I should try overclocking it via the Nvidia drivers and posting the results, that would be interesting.

Saints Row looked kinda fun. My kid played them all through. I never spent more than 5 minutes on it. It looked to me like the first two SR were the best ones, the third looked somehow too much for me.

I like realism. Like that one shooter which modeled non leathal shots correctly. If you shot someone in the leg they started to limp etc. :)

Saints Row 3 was a lot of fun, not very realistic though. One scene had me using a guy dressed in a gimp suit as a chariot as I chased down the bad guys with them. Had me laughing the whole time but it isn't like Red Orchestra or SWAT 4.

I can recommend ioRTCW for both Linux & Windows if anyone is interested in some slightly old school FPS gaming. The Gen 2 rendering works great with my i3 laptop running Arch Linux, so you'll get the most of RTCW if you happen to own it.

https://github.com/iortcw/iortcw/releases

It can also be installed through Arch Linux AUR & other repositories for many of the distros.

So if I have the disc for RTCW, I can use the software linked to play the game on my Linux rig?

Yes, install it as you would then use ioRTCW archives to patch the game (patch-data-141.zip) & install it (iortcw-1.51-linux-<arch>.zip)

Have you got any guides outlining how to install the game off disc, all the guides I'm looking at seem extremely outdated.

Here is another interesting looking one...

This also looks like old-school shooter fun...

Looks fun too

Hmmm, Orwell...

After reading 1984 (a great book, and coming a little too true for my liking BTW), this game has me intrigued - Good ratings too.

Oooh Postal2... pissing has never been as fun.

LOL, Boonie. Does that mean you like it or you're having any luck with it under Linux because I thought I was, but it locked up and I had to use terminal with ps -ef | grep -v grep | grep steam to find the the pid. Then kill -15 or -9 [PID] to terminate the process and restore control of the mouse to the GUI desktop instead of Portal 2. I probably didn't use the ps command the best way, but at least I was probably close and got the process terminated. pressing ctrl-alt-t to bring up the terminal helped to because bringing up system monior by typing gnome-system-monitor did, since I couldn't use the mouse and making a keyboard shortcut to system monitor doesn't help much for situations like this either. Also the new shadow warrior runs very slow under Linux too and I running it with the native version of steam for Linux not under PlayOnLInux or Crossover.

I'm not sure why Portal 2 locked up under Ubuntu Linux 16.4 LTS, but it did and it was kind of a disappointment because the list of popular titles for Linux is already kind slim or lacking. Therefore, it's even worse for a game to lock up and disable the Operating System a little by preventing the mouse from being used. Hopefully, it has nothing to do with the corrupt files Anti-virus Live keeps telling me I have every time I use it.

I'm having a really hard time as it is finding something to do with Linux due to the lack of desirable games to play and because I can't think of anything to write a program for or how to actually write programs for Linux as is. The fact that ALICE for C++ if not C as well is an .exe and won't run under Linux from my experience doesn't help either. Also, I need to actually learn how to program with the rest of C++ anyway because writing the sample programs helped at the time, but wasn't enough and now it's been to long, since I wrote any program with C++ in my opinion.

I still need to learn Open GL at least if not Vulkan if I'm really going to make games or be of any real help to the Linux community.

Whoever mentioned the Vulkan patch probably hit the problem right on the head because Vulkan is probably exactly what Linux needs and where it's at.
