Hey. Just wondering if any of you are considered the "computer guy" amongst your friends. I know I am and it get's a little annoying sometimes when they're too busy asking you they don't stop and think. Like when they say 'my computers too slow' and expect me to give them some magic app to make it run the same as before they clicked ok to every software download they come across. Or instead of searching the net for a certain program, they come to me for the link.

Just ranting.
 
Happens to me, though my friends have some misconceptions. I'm a CS major, and everyone thinks in their head:

CS major = computer science
computer science = working with computers
Therefore, this kid must be a computer whiz, and must certainly know everything there is to know.

Not quite the truth; I'm knowledgable, but then they'll ask "Hey, you're a CS major, how do you use <insert program I've never heard of here> or how come <some gripe they have with comps, expecting me to explain everything>.

I really like it when my friends tell their friends "Yeah, so and so computer company sucks. So and so software sucks. Windows ME sucks"

Then I stare at them and ask "Why does it suck? Do you even give reasons or just go by what I tell you like a zombie?"

<blank stare> "Fuck you Bill, just cause you're good with comps doesn't mean you know more than me"

"Oh really? Then how come you can't seem to keep blaster worm off your comp?"

...

So, hooray, I'm the "computer guy" to everyone (including total strangers).
 
My major is Computer Networking and Computer Egineering so i get it alot too. I've built different systems for people and i always build my own so friends and family usually think i can fix most anything. The only problem is its usually nothing to do with new hardware and software, its always this old crap i know little about yet lol.

They dont bother me too much so i dont mind. I guess its good to good at something and other people look to you for advice.

I just can't wait till i get through all these damned electives in college!

Oh and BillLeeLee, i started off with a Computer Science major and i hated it! lol I hate software programming. I can handle a little of it as i have to with networking and doing command scripts but just doing nothing but that would drive me insane. I love messing with hardware, just not the software that ties it all togethor :).

that's why you make sure to hang out w/ all computer "nerds". my whole group of friends, all very knowledgable in computers.

i don't get it to bad amongst my family, but every so often a relative will bring there computer to a family get together (christmas party for instance) and ask me to fix it. lol.
 
i think most of us are considered the "computer guy" or else we wouldnt be here. :p
 
I work as a computer repair tech. and I have had friends bring their computers to my work place expecting free fixes on more than one occasion. I don't charge them much, but if they show up at work, I hit them for 25-50.

That's my, "Don't do that asshole" fee.
 
i think i got most of you beat.
First im a college student who lives in the dorms right now, im an Electronics Tech Major, and im a Student LAN Admin/Computer Consultant for the ResNet department of my campus. So basicly, i can fix anything that requires power! It got out that both me and my roomate work for ResNet, atleast 4 times a week someone needs computer help.

I know what you mean... My uncle deleted his dial-up ISP account, and I'm magically supposed to know his dial-up number and username/password to fix it for him... :rolleyes:
 
I get asked allot by poeple. As soon as they hear soemoen can put a computer together by themselves (yeah a shocker). They think imust be able to hack into teh NSA or something.

yes, there is absolutely no point to this post. it seems to be a weekly thing to bitch about how we're the computer help people.
you just have to explain to people that you would love to help them, but you're a busy guy, and would appreciate a beer or something. Most people don't even realize how they're not the only person asking you for help.

Anyway, I'm the official geek amongst my friends. Doesn't bother me too much, but I hate trying to fix problems with old computers because I just don't have that much experience with older gear. :(
 
My uncle's nephew (don't ask) once came up to me and asked "Can you hack?"

I stared at him blankly for a sec, realizing his 12-year-old mind was visualizing the n00b-tastic 1337 h4x0r, breaking into Gibsons before breakfast, phr3aking teh intarweb, and such. I replied, "What do you mean?"

"Like, can you hack, into computers? Are you a hacker?"

I had him here - you've probably heard of the differences between hackers and crackers. "Yes, I'm a hacker, in the proper, traditional sense."

Looking a little confused, but not backing down, he said, "So, can you, like, hack into the computers at school and change my grades? The teacher's a bitch and hates me."

I told him to stop watching so many movies.

I know only up to about the introduction of cd media, before that I'm pretty much really confused about alot of things.
 
Yes - it is annoying as hell when I am studying for two AP midterms and some ___ wants me to give him tech support.
 
Yea, I'm 15 and I've been working with computers since I was 10. Built about 6 systems so far, a few for myself, some for family, and others for friends. It does get to be a pain in the arse when you are constatly being baggered. I figure that if I know it I might as well share it to benefit others. That's the mindset that I try to keep and so far I haven't blown up on anyone :D - Cept for my aunt who thinks mac = god.

Neither do I - it's probably the most frustrating thing for me. Someone says hey can you fix this and I take a look at it and it's like - what the hell is that metal thing shaped like a brick? That's a harddrive?! What the ... Whenver I get a clunker I usually take as much time as I can to study it or just make note of things. There will always be the old piece of hardware around though that I just can't seem to get a handle on.

Among my friends everyone thinks they know what they're talking about when it comes to computers but I know way more then they do. I love trying to have a conversation about computers with them and they all try to keep up like they know what they are talking about.

What really bothers me is when people bring me some old POS computer and expect me to make it work again.... Like this one person who brought me his 486 which had recently stopped working. I eventually figured out that the problem was a dead mobo but, come on, it's a fucking 486! I didn't want to have to hunt down parts for it so I just recovered his files off the HDD and told him to go buy a new computer or have me build one.

Though, it is pretty strange when people you don't even know walk up to you in a store and start asking you stuff...

im the compuer guy of my group of friends, and at least they can understand my responsibilites (school = 1st), just be patient and explain to them...

oh well, i guess we are al that different

i personally don't mind,

but when people come with older computers, just explain the complicity of finding parts/diagnosis/price versus a new computer ,and 9/10 times, they bought new computers from me...

Im the "computer guy" in my family too.
Not that its a bad thing, it gave me a business to get into, makes you feel important, and if you're to f-in lazy to help a friend out and fix their computer every now and then, then you arent much a friend to them. Not that it isnt a pain in the ass, but you can be the buddha of windows troubleshooting, doesnt do anyone any good if you never help.

That's the main problem—there are plenty of assholes out there who think that buying a $600 budget box from you is equivalent to buying a 24-hour lifetime warranty + free tech consultation on EVERYTHING.

Well, people may bother me sometimes but I don't usually tell them 'no' because I'd rather be working on computers than doing anything else.
 
Same thing here. I don't mind helping my friends and family, don't even charge if it doesn't cost me anything.

I'm running out of old hardware though, so I some of my friends will finally have to upgrade from their 486s, unless they want me to downgrade them to a 286 I've got sitting here.

What bothers me is when you fix a problem, tell them what it was, what most likely caused it and how to avoid it, and the next week, the computer is having the exact same problem.

im guessing u just think ur friends are teh dumbest ever about computer, and if u do, why not help them out, other then keep on bitching how dumb they are...

explain it to them, or link them to a tutorial site.

then MAYBE next time u guys have a conversation, it can be an intelligent one.

Well I just walked my dad through a drive image restore for his comp because my niece downloaded some virus or some shit that took over IE and started corrupting shit. He lives in Massachusetts and I live in Florida and he knows absolutly nothing about computers and I did talk him through it. Last week I put a new powersupply in my buddies uncles POS Compaq. Had a bitch of a time just finding a new powersupply seeing how it was a Compaq AT powersupply 45 bucks for a 150 watt PS ;) .
So yeah I guess Im the "Computer Guy"
