some of you would really benifit from a nice pair of studio monitors.

there for the most part more expensive, bigger, and not 1/8th inputs but if you have a way of hooking them up use them

i have m-audio bx-8's and i love em loud clear and precise. couldnt ask for more, absolutly no line hiss at full volume.
i hook em up with me m-audio omnistudio (i use it as my sound card) its a usb audio interface and it works great

just wanted to share that with you all

Studio monitors are pretty costly for most people, but you're right, they make a great set of computer speakers. They are made for similar listening environments, and do not require separate amplifiers. Yes, they should definitely be considered by someone who wants the best in computer audio.

I saw the title of this thread and I was all set to come in here and tell some moron that multimedia speakers are about the worst you can get, but instead I find someone who actually understands what good speakers are. I wish I could afford some studio monitors. They'll certainly blow away any computer speaker set.

lol this is sum ammusing stuff.

anyways i like music so its important to me that it sound like it was supposed to. most musicians didnt mix there tracks down on even the best multimedia speakers out there. they mix them down on monitors that were meant to let you hear the sound and not anything else. so dont wast your money with any pair of pc speakers if you want the "best" sound you can have.

The thing is some people don't have enough money for a set of studio monitors, and with they money they do spend they expect to get substantial low frequency output as well. You have to remember too that these are the same people who, when showing off their "cool" new speakers, won't demonstrate the airy highs or liquid midrange but stick to just bass. Unfortunately, as long as the rest of the frequency range isn't complete and utter unlistenable crap, most people equate good audio with good bass.

Such was the case with my younger brother, who likes to not only listen to but also feel his rap music. He had Logitech Z-560s, but after listening to my system, realized the deficiencies of his system and wanted to upgrade. I immediately turned to studio as a possibility but realized that most of them just don't go low enough, so I also checked out some of the matching subs. Needless to say, the price skyrocketed out of his range.

I guess the question now is where am I going with all this. Yes, studio monitors are an excellent option, but obtaining a full-range system comes at a considerable expense. It's the same with "normal" audio gear; sure you may find a deal on a pair of speakers but throw in the added costs of a receiver, cables, conenctors, and subwoofer and you're beyond what most people are willing to pay. $200 is a lot of money to many and for even that they expect audio perfection. For some an audiophile system is simply beyond reach, and for others it's hard to justify the additional cost when they can get most of the performance for much less. Studio monitors are simply more expensive, and it usually is the case that the more you spend the more you get.

Perhaps I'm being ignorant, but can't decent bass management by the soundcard driver send low freq information off to a decent and affordable subwoofer? This is one of the best features of the Revolution.

I think the Swan multimedia speakers look like a good contender for this title as well.

Regardless of how good the bass management it, it is still modifying the sound and it will sound different than the original artists had intended it to sound. Two channel sound should be played on two channels, not mixed and split over more speakers. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but I can definately tell the difference between multimedia computer speakers and real stereo speakers.

Two small satellites and a single subwoofer are essentially the same thing as two full-range speakers provided the sub crossover is below 60Hz or so.
Bass in this range is nondirectional by nature, and since the Revo is simply steering the frequencies (not modifying them) to a low-frequency transducer it should result in functionally identical output.

my bx-8's are known for there profficiency in the sub frequencies

M-audio rates them to a low-end of 37Hz, and I have no reason to disbelieve them. This is too high for full-range cinema soundtrack effects but quite respectable for a pair of 8" monitors.
M-audio neglects to mention how many dB the response is down by at 37Hz, but I'd assume it's probably 6dB.

Note that 37HZ is not "sub" in the sense that it is quite audible, and therefore not subsonic by definition.

ok well if you wanna get all technical, which only about 1 out of ten people here will understand let alone care about the frequency response of there speakers, i know there not "sub" by frequency standards but i bet if 100 people from [H] listened to a song through my setup they'd think i had a sub. the things bump. and they stay clear in the high end too (even at full volume). i may not know the dB count but when i can pick up a bass line from the beatles outside (im in the basement) through concrete and dirt i know there loud.

lol this christmas i broke 3 orniments my mom was pissed. i told her to make sure the tree was stable hahaha.

Zachary is right, your monitors put out strong midbass (80-250hz). With good box design and port, I would bet your monitors could go as low as 40hz before rolling off. Remember, multimedia "subwoofers" are like kiddie toys comparing to real subwoofers but most people here dont know that ;)
