the best software firewall?

i used sygate pro and i really do prefer this since it hogs less memory resources and best of all its simple. however i can not access hotmail, hotmail home page loads but when i try to log in it just keeps on asking me my password over and over again. same with my e bay but it just times out. it looks like syagete even blocks the cookies.

i also use ZA at work, which uses more memory resources but it seems to do its job better.

can anyone recomend me the best software firewall? memory resourse wise and ability wise?
 
Max PC just did a review of a few and named Zone Alarm Pro as their best. I have little personal experience, though. I have liked what I have seen of ZA, though.
 
the reason why i didnt like ZA was due to its bloated colour scehem etc.

i prefer syagate pro and i have used it for 7 years now, but i dont know ever since hotmail upgrade it just wont let me log in until i disable my sygate
 
well i asked whats your best sw fw then?

u can see that sygate is much less on mem. resoucres and it loads faster as well :)
 
Well, personally, I've stopped with software firewalls entirely. I never got much benefit from them other than a certain peace of mind. I've got a wireless router that doubles as a firewall: it's just as good, doesn't bug me at all, and frees up some resources on my laptop.
 
so have i ; i got netgear router wireless router but stil i need to use some form of sw fw right?

The "experts" @ broadbandreports seem to generally advise that a software firewall in addition to a router is a good idea; something to do w/ the router allowing certain packets through that should be further filtered by a software FW.

Most of the time when someone says that, they have NAT, and maybe SPI or port triggering. While these things are nice, they're not a firewall.

Are you SURE your router doubles as a firewall?

I'm pretty sure, yes. Used in conjunction with Kaspersky 2006 beta's intrusion detection, I haven't had a single compromise. Pretty sure my configuration is working as intended.

Would you care to list some of the routers that actually double as firewalls?
 
huh?

yes mines the netgear dg384g true firewall with vpn access, adsl modem and wrireltess router in one.

but for configuration purposes i allowed incoming data to be redirected to one ip adress which is my downloading machine for my edoneky to reach top speeds thats why im looking for a sw fw also

but I use Kerio PersonalFirewall 2 as a rule based software firewall in my Window Boxes w\ a NAT hardware router

of course thats just one layer of defense

what with rootkits so prevelant and married with trojans, the first victim will be the firewall and scanners, everything will seem to be fine yet your still pwnd
which is why you need a layered defense and ideally an IDS

I'm asking for a small list of wireless routers that have true firewall functions. I'm on a DI-624, currently planning to buy a WRT54G.

Well, it was more a curiosity about his personal opinion than asking for buying advice. I've already made up my mind to grab the WRT54G.
 
yeh I looked into it a bit and there really arent all that many wireless routers w\ firewalls :p
