The best netbook?

Seems to be standard fare with the exception of the resolution. It also comes with vista if I remember correctly which is kind of sadface on netbooks. Either engadget or gizmodo said theirs performed a lot better when they put windows 7 on it.
 
Windows 7 performs decently on netbooks. I've got it dual-booting along with XP on a Lenovo S10. There are some weird minor netbook/Windows 7 issues, and XP still outperforms it (subjectively; I havent benchmarked).

S10 is a nice netboot btw. I'm still happy with the purchase a month later, and I've found a lot more uses for it than I thought I would. Netbooks are so damn handy. Its pretty bad when I bring along with me to take a crap.

I get better performance and battery life on my MSI Wind with Vista, not surprising since Vista outperforms XP in general. Don't believe everything you read on the interwebs.

The reason they put XP on most netbooks is to keep costs down.

Don't forget that Vista and small SSDs don't mix very well.

I have found the same; Vista on my NC10 ran better than XP did.

I read about that on mydellmini.com. Now I need to get a copy of Vista for my HP Mini 1030 and try it out :D . My 16gb SSD would probably work fine after vLite-ing it, and maybe a 2gb ram upgrade.

Dear god yes, don't even think about installing Vista or 7 on a machine with less than 2GB of RAM, particularly netbooks with their painfully slow SSDs. You want to be able to cache everything in general use and almost never write to disk with them.

And there's no reason not to upgrade when laptop memory only costs $10-15/GB.
 
Id just waut for the new nvidia platform, those things should be sick. Want to buy a used aspire one? :D

funny, the Aspire One I picked up from Wallyworld yesterday feels solid as a brick. I got the white one, and it feels somewhat like the white macbook, build wise. To me, it looks alot more fragile than it feels.
 
Hmm, it seems to be the general consensus that the Aspire One is a very well built computer. Perhaps I got a lemon, it does happen, especially with things that are mass-produced.
 
Saw the new HP Mini the other day. Looks like a damn nice netbook and I'm fairly jealous of anyone that has it lol

Meh, it has no video out and only 2 USB ports. It looks nice, but I'd take the MSI wind over the HP mini.

Because the HP 2140 retains the 2133's good looks and has conformed with the rest on the adoption of the Atom IMHO I think it stands to be up there at the top of the pile. The 2140 & 2133 arguably share the best netbook keyboard going, the only downside is the reduction in resolution; the 2133 had a market beating 1280 x 768 8.9" screen, which has unfortunately been downgraded to a 1024 x 576 10" screen on the 2140, an unfortunate compromise.

Though I must make a point on the 2133's VIA C7 performance, as I've read many times on how people were put off buying the 2133 due to the processor and said they were glad they made the choice to go with a MSI or EeePC. Yes I'm not saying the C7 is as fast as an Atom, it blatantly isn't, synthetic testing proves this. But at the end of the day if you're buying a netbook for browsing the web, listening to music, word processing & occasional light gaming while on the train then don't let the C7 be a put off. Its more than capable of doing all this without any problems; I should know as I take my 2133 everywhere with me (not without a spare 6-cell though ;)). Bad press is a bitch and the C7 has had its fair share, a lot of which I suspect coming from armchair analysts who spend their evenings re-badging official review quotes as their own spoken opinion.

....but ahem yeah, back to topic....definitely the HP 2140 for me :)
 
Asus 1005HA by far right now. I am probably going to pick that up once its free shipping on new egg and a 2gb stick of ram.

HP minis ARE nice, but their batteries last no more than 3 hours tops, with light use. 1005HA you can wifi, work processing and etc and it will get you 8hrs give or take. HP makes nice looking computers for sure, but the specs lack power such as SSD, Non upgradeable stick of ram, bad battery life. Nice design and finish though
 
I'm looking at the Gateway LT that just came out. Seems like a good deal for $400...
 
I really enjoy my Asus EEE 1000HE (2gb ram upgrade) and it has better battery life than the eee 1005HA.

I think the battery life is about the same.

In Canada, the EEE 1000HE is $439 but comes with a free 2gb upgrade worth $40.
The EEE 1005HE *premium* is $429.
Edit: the EEE 1005HA value is $349 with 1gb and I think the 3 cell battery.

Which of the three is best to get? $70 difference between value and premium for the 1005HA. 2GB is nice but beneficial for photoshop which i doubt I would use.
