Which bearing type is the best:
1) Sleeve
2) Two ball
3) Hydrodynamic?

Hydrodynamic are going to be the quietest, ball bearing will last the longest and sleeve bearings are just cheap.

Sleeve bearings aren't as bad as they sound. They hae zero rumble noise and I've found from experience that they tend to be quieter due to this. Ball bearings in fans are over rated and are a waste.

I bought a bunch (7) of quality 80mm fans to replace the cheapo Evercool 80mm sleeve bearing fans I had previously and they are infact louder (and at 3 times the price). I've since put my evercool's back in place.

Hydro bearing is another matter. I''ve personally never played with those. ;)

I agree sleeve bearings are quiet, but over the years of runing fans the ball bearing fans will last longer with less lubrication. They can rumble if made improperly or with bad allignment. I really like the Panaflo fans: L1A for silence, M1A for everyday, H1A for performance, and U1A if you wear ear plugs :p

Money no option, go with the hydrodynamic. I have a Scythe S-Flex 1600rpm it is creepy quiet even runing full speed. Sorry for the cheap, bad wording really, should have said less expensive. I have a couple sleeve bearing fans runing on an industrial controller that have never given me trouble as long as I relube them when they start to make strange noises.

Yeah, sleeves do require a little maintanence from time to time. Ball bearings tend to get worse if fiddled with though I've found. I tried to put some razor oil into a few of the louder ball bearing fans i mentioned earlier and it made them worse. I'll never buy BB fans again. As for panaflos, well, I'm forever qouting my panaflo 120mm's as the worse noise to cfm ratio fans I've ever bought. The more recent models are much better from what I've heard and the hydro bearing ones are really good. Apparently...

What are some enthusiast available hydro fans?

I have seen only few hydrodynamic fans in the market. GlacialTech have one 92mm.

I have found the best noise to CFM ratio fans to be the sleeve ones because they are cheap, last a long time, and are decently quite. The only with them is they can be noisy if they get a decent amount of dust build up in them. So occasionally you have to blow some CO2 into the center part of the fan to make sure there is nothing obstructing the parts from moving.

what do you lube them with?

one thing to be careful of - do be sure that the oil you're using isn't conductive. as the fan spins i think you can imagine that it will throw small particles of conductive oil all over the inside of your computer. small risk, but a pointless risk none the less.

one precaution i take when lubricating fans is to let them run outside of my case for a good 30 mins to make sure i don't have that problem.

Also helps to put the sticker back over the opening when you are done or use a piece of tape if you tear up the sticker.
