Hey there,

I bought me a new computer like a few days ago and then installed Need For Speed Underground on it. It USED to worked just fine, alll the details were turned up really high on the Ge-Cube X600XT 256mb. But now for some reason as soon as i try to load need for speed it just restarts the computer. I thought it must've been a heat issue so i stuck the computer by the air conditioner (yeah, the computer was pretty much running at ~16 degrees celcius) and still need for speed underground would restart the computer. I thought it was a driver issue (ATI drivers) so I downloaded the newest catalyst and still it restarts. I thought it was a XP SP2 issue so I uninstalled SP2 and went with sp1 for a few days and it still restarted. No matter what I did, the stupid game restarted the computer and then the error reporting message would be on the screen after the reboot. Mind you, no other games on the computer have a problem xcept Need For Speed Underground.

Anyone know whats the problem with the computer? do I need more fans? or perhaps a fan on the north and south bridge?

For those who think the computer spec might have something to do with it, its:
GA-8IPE1000Pro2
Ge-Cube X600XT 256MB
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz E edition(I dont know what the E was there for, but non the less, the E was there on the box)

Any help with this problem would be greatfully appreciated.

Do you get a "Blue Screen" before it restarts? If you don't, you may have the Automatically Reboot setting turned on in the System Properties>Advanced Tab>Startup and Recovery menu. Turn it off, and try causing the crash again. The blue screen can sometimes provide useful information, such as which driver, if any, caused the failure.

did you overclock your system?

maybe your PSU got poo poo?
 
the "E" in the 3.0E means that its an extreme edition CPU. it has 1mb L2 cache instead of 512kb L2 cache. just provides a bit more performance because the CPU can hold more instructions.
 
go into your BIOS and try increasing the voltage on the Vcore and the Vdimm just one up form where its at and see if that helps. i had the same problem just last night with UT2004. i could start the game and everything but right when i join a game and it spawns me the computer would restart. i went into the BIOS and increased the voltage on the CPU and the RAM and now it runs perfectly. hope this helps :D good luck.
 
I'm pretty sure he has just a Pentium 4 3.0E (Prescott) cpu, not an Extreme Edition (EE). Those only come in 3.2 and 3.4 GHz. ... and it doesn't seem like he's responding.

yes thats true.sry about the confusion then...so what is the difference between the "E" and the "EE"??

the E is a presscott core with 1mb cache, and the EE is presscott (LGA775) and northwood (478), has 2mb cache, and some other core opts, i believe
 
ok sorry guys,

How could I have responded when the server had a database stuff up? ;). Also I have yet come to another conclusion. The game works fine without the need of SP2. as soon as SP2 is installed and then restarted(after the installation that is) and you try to run the game, it comes with the blue screen now...with the technical details of:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x862E5E22, 0xA1D3B9A8, 0x00000000)

erm...what does that mean?

Ok. Thanks for the clarification on the 'E' part of the processor.

DirtyApe, I tried bumping it up, but then it doesn't work :(. the whole computer dies and then I have to reset the bios (CMOS jumper).
 
SP2, from most reports, is really buggy and there is a massive list of applications that won't run correctly with it installed. You could try to check for any NFS:U updates, any driver updates, or, if you're okay with it, run without SP2.

yeah well, that KB does not help since my ram is not faulty, i even swapped for a new set and even then it does the same error message. I guess i will have to live with sp1(which i dont mind doin anyways :). but with xp, the windows updates will just download SP2 as part of the update wont it?

are you sure that virutal drive program wasnt accessing the bad sectors on the ram? did you test the ram?

in the event of faulty ram, try lowering the clock wiht a divider, or RMA it

no it was a driver issue with a program. took alsmost 2 weeks to figure this out. yes i did memtest for about 37 hours and a while bunch of other test. hell even dell replaced all my hardrives. i was using an old version of the virtual drive program that i had on my external hardrive that i was always using. after i updated to the newest of the virtual drive program. all was well. so it wasnt my memory. but it could still be his memory. i would suggest doing what u told him. to run memtest for a while and see if that finds any errors.

Umm, have you tried overvolting your AGP card yet? This fixed similar problems on 2 boards of mine. Go into the BIOS and crank it up 0.05V ....see if that helps.
 
What exactly does increasing the voltage of the Vcore and Vdimm do? I am having some minor reboot issues.

supplies more voltage to the processor core or memory to allow for stable operation
 
try the smallest increments available to you. make sure you know what you stock voltage is for your parts. go up in small increments, testing everytime you go up, once its works and plays for awhile, leave it
