The $900 6800U

Location of winner: Ukraine.

I imagine the entire 6800 line is a bit hard to come by there. Accounting for inflated prices of computer parts out of hot areas like the US, it might be worth it to him.

Then you obviously don't know how much high end hardware costs in other countries.

if the person thinks its worth that much then let him buy it and be happy , i seen hifi cables for £x000's - each to their own

I believe exporting that technology to that area is illegal? I suspect the purchase is government backed. THese cards can be adapted to provide tactical telemtry for cruise missles.

The guy who sold it is being dangled from a 10 story building by two man in black.

This is the only reasonable explaination for the auction. ;)

It may seem insane to you but if you're rich and you wanted a 6800UEE, $1100 is not too bad.

Remember, a new Ferrari can cost $200,000+ :)

Yep, take the UK for example. A 6800GT is minimum £284 that I have seen (and I looked a lot a few weeks back). I believe the exchange rate is about 0.56 GBP to the US$. Therefore, this card should be 507 US$. It is nowhere near that price.

And the 128MB version of the GT is £243 -> US$ 434

Stuff does cost a lot in other countries.

$1,100 now.... I'll glady take my 6800U (non-ee) for $380.

Even if it's because of the location a double premium is not right. I'm sure someone would have gladly bought and shipped the winner a GT/Ultra for a lot less of a surcharge.

But its finding someone to do that.

Plus, $1100 might not be much to them over there. I dont know what it is like, but they could be earning 3 times as much as us. But seeing as though everything is 3x as expensive, they will not notice any difference.

Re Dick U Lus :)
Well, thats why pretty much all the computer in my sig was brought in pieces inside my luggage in the last vacation :p

anyone smart enogh to know video cards, would never be dumb enough to spend over $1000 on a video card. Some odd reason like he cant buy new tech in Yukraine had to be it. Sad thing is, he could have probably flown to the US, picked on up at PC store and still saved money.

Its obviously someone who won the lotto or is just insanely wealthy. No dumb punk kid would have that much money, and anyone with that much money has to be smart enough to know what they are buying and not give a fuck. Either that or mom and dad are raising a spoiled brat...

In other words, I was amazed at first to see these ebay auctions, but now I just don't give a shit. Not my money, not my problem.

Imagine that you make a few hundred thousand dollars a year and know what a savings account is. Not an uncommon scenario. Also imagine that you want to buy the most powerful video card out there without question... Is $1,100 too much? For you - no. For the average person? Absolutely.

It's all relative. While I would never bid on something like that, there are plenty of people who would have no problem doing so.

Yes but a Ukrainian doing so? Their per capita GDP is $5,300, versus the US's per capita GDP of $37,800. Only about 2 people could probably afford this card, and that is President Kuchma and the country's Prime Minister.
