Does anyone know the order the 8800s came. like G80 i think was one of the earlier ones but im not sure.

Original Gen
1)8800gtx = G80
2) 8800gts 640mb = G80
2 1/2) 8800gts 320mb
1)8800 Ultra (G80)

2nd Gen
3) 8800gs = G80? (I think they are the left over gts 640/320s. I might be wrong here).
3) 8800gt = G92
3) 8800gts 512mb = G92

3rd Gen
4) 9600gso (original) = G92
4) 9600gt = G94
5) 9600gso 512mb = G94.

4th Gen
6) Upcoming GT2 series. Rebranded 9600gt's and 8800gt's. Same cores/hardware, new sticker.

Im not 100% on them all. Feel free to correct me where im wrong. They came out in clumps so its hard to say which came first.

8800gtx/8800gts640 -> 8800 gts 320 -> 8800 ultra -> 8800 gt -> 8800 gts 512mb

thnx guys that helped i am planning on getting a gts and i wasnt sure if it was a better card of the 8800

Yes, but the order in which they were released does not correspond to their performance, in some cases.

The new GTS is the same card as the G92 8800 series.

the gts's are bested easily by very modestly priced cards such as the 4830. You would need to get the gts for $50 or less and not be playing on any resolution higher than 1680x1050 with low aa and af.

The 8800GS was G92, basically a stripped down version of the 8800GT. The 8800GS went on to become the 1st gen 9600GSO. The second gen 9600GSO is G94 and is basically a stripped down version of the 9600GT. The 1st gen 9600GSO was faster than the 2nd gen 9600GSO.

Order of speed:
8800 Ultra > 8800GTX > 8800GTS 512MB > 8800GT 512MB > 8800GTS 640MB > 8800GS ~ 8800GTS 320MB

Yeah I gave up on the 88/98xx series when they were all basically the same thing. Either go gtx or ati IMO

ofc it is, graphics card manufacturers such as ATI and Nvidia are making something new in 2-4 year periods. Those GPUs G series designed in 2007 will be used for future cards also, approx next 2 years;).

LOL, and yet ironically everyone in FS/FT seems to think those 8800 series are still worth $100 and up.

Yes, we understand that you paid a sh1t-load of money to get those, but they're like 3 generations old now... :p

Stop trying to fund your entire GX280 upgrade...

BTW, for OP or anyone else interested... EVGA 9800 GTX+ SC $144.99 after MIR
I'm thinking I might just bite on this one... but is it worth it?

ATi does not do this. They release slightly altered variations of the chip, but they do not take the exact same card, flash a BIOS with a different name into it, then sell it under a new name as an alliance with the next-gen cards. nVidia has disallowed many reviewers (such as HardOCP, for instance) to review their new GTS line of cards. This is because these reviewers are reputable, and have a strong fan-following, and they know that if these knowledgeable and respected sites were to review their product, it would look A LOT like the 8800 GTS and 9800 GTq2354tjz.

Not really. The HD4850 performs about the same as the 9800GTX and can be had for around $150 without dealing with a rebate. The HD4870 512MB can be found for the same price as the 9800GTX pre-rebate price and is faster than the 9800GTX.
Sapphire 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $145
Sapphire 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB PCI-E Video Card - $165

<---prefers not to use Sapphire... or Sparkle... or any of the other secondary brands that New Egg offers.

Well, not unless it's a screaming hot deal :p

Well same here but still, wanted to point out that the 9800GTX+ is not a good deal.

hehehe. I do appreciate the suggestions. Kept me from blowing another $150. :)

if you can wait for 1 month, the new radeons are comming out in april, so the current cards will get a nice price drop.

yea the 4850 512mb is a little better than my 8800 gts 640 oc

but not enough to call it ... better

at 1920x1200 the frames are higher but not noticeable improvement higher

there wasnt anything i couldnt do with my g80 that i could with the 4850

4870 and 4850 are getting MAJOR price cuts very soon.
Theres absolutely no reason to even consider a 9800GTX when you can get a 4870 for $149 soon.
