hey i was told to NOT buy a barton 3200+ or 3000+ w/ 400FSB beacuse i can get the same out of a 2400 or 2500 mobile for a lot cheaper.. is this true? will the processors perform the same?

Remember though that to acheive a substantial and stable overclock you'll need to invest in a new cooling solution, ie. heatsink. Even after that though it'll still cost much less than a new 3200+ and could very well out perform it.

odds are you could reach 3000+/3200+ speeds with the same voltage as retail 3000+/3200+ chips or less voltage. so you wouldnt need to invest in expensive cooling, anything rated for 3000+/3200+ speeds would do.

edit: example...
___

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail ($187.00 shipped)...

vs.

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2400+, 266FSB, 512K Cache - OEM ($78 shipped)...

with (thermalright and panaflo combo (very quiet) ~$40 shipped)

THERMALRIGHT SLK-900(A) CLIP-ON...

and

PANAFLO 80X25MM 12L 2-PIN FAN...

or (for bolt mount)
___

ZALMAN CNPS7000A-ALCU ULTRA QUIET CPU COOLER (~35 shipped)...

so for around $120 you can get excellent cooling solutions with a mobile amd chip that would very most likely out perform the 3000+/3200+ retail chips, even with the same cooling ill bet.
