Today I just bought a new hard drive... Western Digital Caviar SE, 200GB, 8mb cache. I put it in and was in the process of formatting it when I heard a sound that made me wake up my neighbour's cat with swearing.

click.. click.. click.. click.. click..

The store I bought it from's already closed, and tomorrow is a sunday here. I have to work on monday and tuesday all day, meaning wednesday is the earliest I can get this thing replaced. A manufacturer's warranty won't cover me for the lost time and hassle of having to get the drive replaced :rolleyes:

Funny how I've managed to always be lucky and gotten a good WD drive, but after my first and only bad one I don't think I'll get another one any time soon.
 
That would be the click o' death.

It was no good out of the box.
 
Yeah... there's no way I'm going to even try formatting it completely, it's not worth the effort. I think any drive that makes a headclick sound when it was just bought deserves to get taken right back to the store and replaced. It's just a pain that I'm going to have to wait until Wednesday at the earliest to visit the store again. :mad:

Out of curiosity, anyone know the failure rate of these drives?
 
Not offhand. I believe its going to leave a bitter taste in your mouth, but WD is pretty decent. The odds of getting another DOA are pretty slim. Buy a lotto ticket if you get another DOA one, but watch out for lightning strikes :D
 
Ironically enough, in the machine it was going to replace is currently another WD drive and an IMB Deathstar. Neither of which have ever failed. I think I was probably just pushing my luck too far :D
