Booted up the laptop yesterday, and my desktop was gone.

Nice.

Mostly just shortcuts, but also a spreadsheet (with a backup elsewhere, but a couple days out of date.)

Seriously, WTF microsoftcucks? Updates are disabled, both service and registry, and it was fine the night before. How does ms manage to F up computers like this?

Not looking to troubleshoot it, fed up with this crap. Just venting.

Back on linux until i get tired of command-line work arounds for simple tasks like keeping my bluetooth speaker hooked up.

<sigh>

smh, f'n microdicks.

Is it gone, or is explorer (shell) being stupid? Sometimes the desktop just goes away for a while (assuming you didn't just disable desktop icons).

Only reason I still have windows is gamepass. Once it expires, I'm back to Linux.

I specifically bought a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 for my last couple years of college because I had so many issues in the past with Windows on my laptops. Surely a Microsoft laptop would work will with Microsoft software right???

Nah, it was awful. The thing would nuke itself randomly and break its WiFi drivers. Would have to boot into Ubuntu to save myself and redownload old driver versions. On one occasion it nuked the Wifi AND the USB drivers, so I couldn't even use a flash drive to copy drivers over on. Numerous other issues with the thing too. Realtek audio getting nuked was another issue I've seen be common. Back when I worked IT we had a lady come in where the Windows update would nuke her keyboard and trackpad input as soon as Windows got connected to the internet and began installing updates.

Windows is a joke. Hate that I'm stuck using it at my job.

What brand is your BT speaker?

I've never had issues under Mint / Manjaro / Debian with any BT devices, they just work out of the box...

as near as i can tell, it was gone. i rebooted a couple times, nothing. also f'ing onedrive kept coming back even though it was uninstalled. man i swear, i hate ms so much right now.

oh well.

the BT speaker is an anker. it connects fine when i boot up, after some fiddling, but if I'm reading or watching tv while i'm surfing the web, it'll silently disconnect and I have to go back into bluetooth devices and reconnect. just a pita. I'm using mint.

sounds like a pebcak or id10-t error to me.

edit; oh and if onedrive is actually on and it did actually get deleted, you can probably find it in onedrive's trash....

How many of you remember fixing computers for friends and family?

The worst ones are the "my son knows computers but he couldn't fix it" always meant they know enough to cause more harm than good. I hated working on those the most. The best people are the ones that just throw up their hands soon as it goes wrong.

Just reinstall and leave it as is and it should be fine for you. Learn and experiment on a different pc or a virtual install so you don't mess up your mission critical stuff.

Hate to break the news to you, but it's not just a coincidence that the people who fuck with their Windows installs the most end up having the most problems. If you want Windows to work well, then stop trying so hard to "fix" things that aren't broken.
This.

You dont need to disable updates via the registry....

So what else have you "tinkered" with...

Did you check under C:\Users for a new profile, incase your existing one was corrupted?

And onedrive is included in windows now so prob why it keeps coming back, typical MS fashion

i shouldn't try to fix windows? maybe if windows wasn't spying on me, I wouldn't have to "fix" it. maybe if ms didn't want to insert ai into every aspect of it's shitty os, I wouldn't need to "fix" that, either.

seriously, what are you thinking?

actually, you *DO* need to disable updates in the registry.

if you disable them in services.msc or gpedit.msc they still manage to restart.

and if **I** uninstall onedrive, then i expect it to stay uninstalled. again, ms wants to store my stuff on onedrive so they can datamine it for advertising, kinda like google.

no, i didn't check for a new profile, i uninstalled windows and installed mint. that seemed to solve the problem.

You are missing the point. Windows isn't broken. It works precisely the way Microsoft intends.

It by and large does work when you use it as intended: MS account, telemetry, AI crap, subscriptions and all.

But you CAN NOT by reasonable means remove all this crap from Windows anymore.

The frog has boiled to death. I've worked on Windows machines for 30 years. If you hate that many aspects of what Windows now is, LEAVE IT. Now. And stay gone from it.

I have. The latest Win 11 feature updates finally made me leave. After all these years since Windows 3.1.

This is battered wife syndrome. If you want out of the bad relationship badly enough, you just walk away and forge a new path. Afterwards you realize there wasnt anything there you couldn't live without.

that's what i said: I'm done with windows!

i hate linux, but i hate windows more.

Several things can be true, this guy trying to tweak windows updates etc... could have broken windows

However even m$ has admitted that a lot of windows is sort of broken atm.... in my case I have had to use this bat file on my main pc in order to be able to use the start menu on my pc for over a year as something is broken and the start menu just refuses to work / allow me to select anything on it or the taskbar without killing and restarting explorer.exe when logging on after the PC has been in sleep mode.

taskkill /im explorer.exe /f
start explorer.exe
exit

I appreciate the commitment to actually using Linux after a rant, rather than just saying you will. However long it may last.

If you disable the Windows Update service under services, windows update does NOT run, it can not run, because that is the main service it uses....

I get people can hate linux also, but I often then ask, when was the last time you used it? Recently and if so which distro and why did you hate it...

today, and because i can't run any of my games, can't run any of my software, can't keep my bluetooth speaker connected.

k, legit reasons.

I tend to say those very things when people say "just move to linux". Plenty of people have paid apps or other apps that do not have a great alternative under Linux, or would have to learn an entirely new way of doing things..

Games yes, hit and miss, protonDB has come a long way, but if you play any games with rootkit DRM, often do not work well (Easy Anti-cheat works fine) as I play many games under linux with Steam ProtonDB https://www.protondb.com/

Honestly, this thread has been great. It's hard talking about this stuff even with a group of seasoned enthusiasts like all of us because change is really, really hard and both the problems and solutions surrounding what Windows has turned into are frustrating to the limits of tolerance. Mainly because it should never have gotten to this point.

Not that I would ever defend windows or microflat.

If you feel like you must disable updates to use a OS. You really shouldn't be using that OS.

I get why people dislike windows, its a terrible os made by a terrible company. Windows is what they say it is though. If you aren't in anymore for telemetry, ai and updating while your pc is "off". Then I mean just leave. You know exactly what you have to do to be in control of your software. Arch/Cachy/Manjaro. It's easier then ever to just leave all that MS crap behind.

I'm not sure if he meant he's having trouble with Linux or Windows with those issues in the last post. The way it was written it could have been either.

Sounds like they had issues with both. Though they seem to understand one option has actual solutions, while the other does not (anymore).

I had issues with windows, then switched to linux, but the gaming thing is tough to get past. I don't do a lot of gaming, just "ship graveyard" and "the crust," both are steam apps and I tried the top 4 listed proton patches (experimental, hotfix, and whatever the two or three next top releases were, i don't recall them offhand.)

the weird thing is: in the last month or so I've gotten so frustrated with both OS's, that i've reinstalled them both at least a half dozen times, and *sometimes* the games will work on mint, and sometimes they are fubar. so I get pissed, blow away the drive, reinstall windows just long enough to want to kill some puppies, and go back the other way.

my poor SSD's gotta be: seriously, old man, wtf are you even doing? lol

Brother just dual boot at that point. Do most of your stuff in Linux and have a Windows partition just for the few games that don't work on Linux

today, and because i can't run any of my games, can't run any of my software, can't keep my bluetooth speaker connected.

Linux Mint is bit long in the tooth. Many people are switching to CatchyOS (Arch for gaming) Nobara (Fedora for gaming) or Bazzite (Fedora-based SteamOS alternative with expanded hardware support). Everyone's waiting for SteamOS (also Arch-based) to go gold, which will probably be when they launch the Steam Machine.

Ugh, I always hated dual booting. I always seemed to run into partition issues, or worse yet. I need access to both OS's.

My solution was, build another box. Run dedicated OS's on each. Bam, herpes!

With the death of Windows 10, now is a good time to dual boot on a single drive with Linux since Windows 10 will remained untouched by MS, which means they won't screw around with your boot partition.

If your re installing anyway you probably don't have anything to loose at the moment.
Don't kill your SSD though, sounds like buying more storage is about to go up up up too. lol

If you install cachy. Don't just X off the Hello program that pops up once your installed. Click the "Apps/Tweaks" button turn on cachy update (for a taskbar update clicky). Click enable bluetooth if you need it. There is a click there that says "Install gaming packages" click that and install the gaming meta package. Click Rank Mirrors. As well. Then you should be pretty much golden.

Or if you dont need 3D GPU support in Windows, just use vmware workstation or something and run a Windows VM.

For me running Mint, i do run 6.14 Kernel.

Cool thing about Linux is, you can fix break it even more.

Really? Wanna explain how in a way that doesn't relate to Linux in 2010?

Because I've been running Linux for quite some time now and I've broken it about as often as I broke my Windows installs - Which is almost never.

Lot's of ways, actually. Of course you can undo most of them. Unlike Windows, where there are ways to "fix" a broken install...if it happens to work for your particular flavor of broken.

I'm good at breaking software, Windows or Linux, BSD, whatever. Trust me, it can be done.

Edit: one way I recently broke stuff is by creating an encrypted directory in kde using their whatever it's called built in feature, and then deleting a directory...think it was "~/.cache". The files defining all your encrypted folders are in there, so delete them and poof--it's like they never existed. The files actually containing the data still exist though, so I was able to recover...one of the two directories, since I had the secrets saved remotely.
