I'm upgrading from AMD 2100+ 266 fsb to 3000+ 333fsb, firstly will the speed jump be worth 91 dollars? Secondly, will I need additional cooling? I'm running a shuttle ITX with only the stock cooling.
Lastly, will I need to upgrade my ram, I have 512 of pc2100 right now... thinking about pc2700 for about as much as the CPU price, sub 100 dollar rage.

get a 2500+ and set it to 200fsb

match that with pc3200

or get xp mobile 2600+ set it to 11*200 , 1.6v, then cool and fast

266 bus speed = 133fsb (what you have)
400 bus speed = 200fsb (what you want to have)
pc3200 = 200fsb
pc2700 = 166fsb

this is old....but if you read it you should understand why they do the "fsb" the way they do.

as for the memory. In theory, its the ammount of bandwith you will get with it. pc3200 = 3.2gb/s, pc2700 = 2.7gb/s, etc.

The thing im worried about is cooling, which is why i dont want to o/c at all... its worth paying a little extra for the faster cpu to me.

before you upgrade, play around with overclocking, just dont up the vcore past 1.75 and you'll be fine. I'm not sure going to a 3000+ is really worth it. You should be able to get pretty close to that with what you have (assuming you have a newer 2100+)

What chipset does that board have? Overclock the FSB to 133/166. It will either work, or it wont work. Post your temperatures in C please =).

Get a better fan.

Paying for that speed upgrade isnt worth it, but overclocking for free is. At most, get new ram then overclock.

Thats not that bad. Depending on the board, it could report it higher than it actually is, could also be that you dont have enough airflow in your case. If your really worried about temp, dont rais the vcore and just see how far you can push it on stock voltage. If you do that, there is no way you can hurt anything.

I just put a nvidia 5700fx in about a month ago, I run most games pretty decently, doom 3 at about 35fps at high quality 10by7 before I hastily unistalled the piece of crap. So you think I should just push the clockspeed a little and see how it does? THe fan has an auto shutdown detect and fan speedup so it shouldnt be tooo bad.

I just tweaked my bios settings... it doesnt allow manipulation past 133 fsb... 166fsb makes the computer unbootable, gives me some bios error. I changed one 'CPU/FSB' setting to Aggressive hoping it will give some extra umpphhh.

That's why you can't set the FSB above 133. Because 133 is all your RAM will support.
Don't bother with PC2700. Get PC3200. It's the same price, and will run with a FSB of 200.

If you are going to buy new RAM and a processor, then shouldn't you just go for a Socket 754? 2800+ Athlon 64 chips are pretty cheap.

I really think with little or no overclocking capability and very limited upgradable motherboard compatiblity that the only thing to do here is buy a new CPU/RAM.

while on the topic of FSB, would CPUs limit FSB overclock? I'm having trouble getting my 1800+ to do anything more than 433 MHz... I have an NF7-S v2 so there is a pci/agp lock. Any ideas?
