Arctic Cooling MX-1

Testing setup:
AMD Opteron 146 overclocked to 3GHz @ 1.450v
Scythe Ninja w/ 120mm 115cfm Panaflo
Coolermaster Centurion 5 case w/ 80mm fan in the front, 120mm fan on the rear.
Room Temp: 77-78f (centralized a/c)

Testing is done with the case closed. I used the method from arctic silver's instruction, dab a little compound and plop the heatsink on it. The AS5 temperature recordings were taken from my SP2004 log. Here are the CPU temps below.

Arctic Silver 5 (re-applied to cpu 5 times, 3 out of 5 are the same result.)
Idle: 33c
Load: 47c

Arctic Cooling MX-1 (applied to cpu only once.)
Idle: 32c
Load: 43c

According to the chart on arctic cooling's website, temperature is supposed to drop by 2-4c within a day or two. I will post results tomorrow and the day after to confirm this.

does this mx-1 thermal compound come with the arctic cooling 64 freezer pro??
Yep it does , same thing they use on freezer 7pro too and it works a treat.

Yes it does...I used it for a while and then switched to AS5 and my temps were exactly the same even after a few days. Recently I switched to Zalman STG-1 and got a 1c drop idle and 2c drop load....I'm never going back to paste.

How do you put your compound on the cpu? Nice temp drop on the STG-1, I have to try it!

The STG1 zalman stuff is like nailpolish. It comes with a brush.

The instructions say to spread it over both the base of the CPU and HSF, but I forwent said instructions and only spread it on the IHS top. I lost 2'c under Load for a total temp of about 36'c (38 for cured AS5) at sig settings... These temps are while playing oblivion with an instance of Prime running... (stimulate Ram, CPU, GPU).

Right now I "Idle" at 29'c... (I say "Idle" as I'm surfing the internet, with flash webpages, listening to music and running a few interface apps, total CPU usage of about 9%-20%)..

what kind of CPU? I covered the entire IHS with it, and cleaned off the bits that squeezed out (with alcohol) when I mounted the block...

The Zalman STG-1 thermal grease isn't good in the long run. According to its Material Safety Data Sheet, which silversinksam on ocforums.com obtained from Zalman, STG-1 is just oil based silicone thermal material. The oil is the reason why STG-1 works so well in the short run, but given time, the oil will degrade and lead to even worse temps than if you had just stayed with AS5. To quote:

" I've discussed this with people in the know regarding this silicone based Zinc oxide TIM. Their MSDS is confusing as the numbers in the composition information do not add up. I can also say that this TIM most likely will have migrations issues that are present with high oil based silicone TIMS. Initially you will get good results with a high oil based thermal paste, long term migration issues will most likely impede performance of this TIM.
This composition is exactly what I thought it was and is nothing spectacular as far as i can tell, in fact in my opinion it is sub par to quality high performance TIMs put out by Shin Etsu Chem. and Arctic Silver inc."

not to derail but, what is considered long term to them? i don't plan in terms of "long term" when i put a heatsink on. if it lasted 2 years i would never need anything more. maybe i just dont see why this long term factor is important to you.

Exactly..I'm a habitual upgrader and if I'm not changing a cpu I'm switching out mobos. Even if it has to be reapplied every 6 months or so it's still worth it because it's so easy to get a perfect application with no mess. ;)
