According to researchers at the University of Rochester, the video below can predict whether or not you have a high IQ.

The study found that people with higher IQs were actually the worst at seeing movement in the large images, or, in other words, the best at filtering out distracting sensory signals. How people performed on this simple task turns out to be a very good predictor of their performance on a standardized intelligence test.

Read up on this on Reddit a few days ago. I'll find the link in a bit, but it's already been proven to not be credible.

I would think any relatively capable FPS gamer would be good at these, but it has nothing to do with IQ, which is an arbitrary number in the first place designed solely for bragging rights. (I guess I have an issue with IQ tests...although I scored 163 on a mensa entrance exam, then abruptly decided I did not want to be associated with such egotistical morons.

Question: Which is more intelligent: A. Programmer writing code no one else can write and getting paid salary. -OR- B. Manager of the code writer, who gets paid twice as much for not writing code. -OR- C. CEO of game company that can't write a single line of code but makes millions on sales of said game.

Depends on your philosophy of what intelligence is, obviously the CEO would be considered intelligent because he is the one driving Ferrari's...while the code writer drives home to his low rent apartment driving his Camry, complaining about that stupid idiot jerk boss he was dumb enough to work for.

Didn't see any difference in difficulty between the large or small images. Am I smart, stupid, or average? :p

Since we're all above average thanks to our gaming hobby , I'm calling BS on this.

IQ is really not a good indicator of success. Neither financially, nor by Darwinian standards.

Is there any correlation of IQ to financial success after average or high average IQ? I have never really seen one myself. I mean yeah, people with an IQ of 80 tend to not be rich unless they inherited it, or are actors, or professional athletes, but once you hit 100+ is there really much of a difference in financial worth?

In fact, being lowlife scum popping out/siring bastards in the projects and trailer parks living on the government dime seems to be the most successful breeding strategy currently. Which really says a lot of uncomplimentary things about our society. The least of us is achieving superiority through sheer numbers in the survival of the fittest game. Makes you wonder who the king/queen really is. Is it the useless shit populating the next generation, or the drones paying for it? Woah, little off track there.

This statement is very ironic...

Please explain. Or, in your opinion does it take a genius to play a game successfully?

The gaming comment wasn't the issue: you mentioned IQ being designed for bragging rights and then you mention your score and the fact you applied to Mensa. You then go on to say that you were in effect "too good" to be associated with such egotists... I thought it humorous. :D

LOL, I suppose one could argue FPS games are primarily about bragging rights for a great number of players. KTD ratios are kind of like a Gamer IQ.

What does having money and stuff have to do with intelligence? So much for that 163...

Indeed... I never understood people caring more about the K/D ratio than just having fun. I hate when people compare K/D ratio as if it matters... my K/D ratio is 20:1 but you don't see me bragging.

:p See what I did there BBA?

In my lifetime, I can safely say there are a ton of idiots out there with a lot of money and that being so, does not mean they're intelligent. The whole IQ testing and related nonsense holds no weight to it as I've met "Mensa" level people both at an old job and at school-- they were pretty dense individuals.

Albert Einstein said it best, "I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."

While I agree I must say knowledge and intelligence are also completely different things... so the quote doesn't fit.

Am I extra smart? I looked for movement by looking at the edge of the images where it meets a solid gray.

This is sad, I had no issues seeing the movement in the small images, but in the larger images there were only a few were I was aware that there was movement. I wonder if that has more to do with adHD than a mensa card that's in some box in my parents garage.

I couldn't see the motions for half of the quick flashes.

I guess that means I'm half retarded.

IQ tests are great for determining who is good at taking IQ tests. Nothing more. The simple fact that you can study for an IQ test renders them kinda pointless IMO.

IQ scores on the standardized tests are correlated with school performance, job performance, higher income, criminal behavior, and various other measures of performance.

Saying IQ is meaningless is like saying there's no such thing as mental illness. Yes, it's 'just a test.' We don't fully understand how the brain works, so we use tests of various criteria to make a diagnosis. If you wanted to really compare brains in terms of 'raw' capability with complete accuracy you would need a full understanding of how the brain works and the ability to dissect and simulate the brains in question to determine their ability at various tasks without various outside influences. One could certainly argue that cultural differences are so important that IQ testing is useless for, say, comparing uncontacted native Amazonians to Europeans, but nobody is using IQ tests to do that.

when i play i play for fun, accidently i get high KDR, usually get called a "cheat" or "hacker", so what's your story ;p :D

I wonder if there's a test linking IQ to egregious overuse of run-on sentences? :D

No, if you would have thought about it a little more you would have realized I mentioned it not for bragging, but to head off idea someone else responding to claim superior intelligence, the way so many people here like to do (fruitless I know, will happen anyway.)

100% agree, but I had to do it to realize that. Sad thing is I had to study it to find out, a sign of lower IQ maybe?

One could certainly argue that cultural differences are so important that IQ testing is useless for, say, comparing uncontacted native Amazonians to Europeans, but nobody is using IQ tests to do that.

This is why: It is considered to be racially insensitive to make such comparisons. Harvard's Dr. Jason Richwine just got fired for comparing IQ tests of Mexicans to Americans. He even had 'factual' data to prove his results... (We can't let facts get in the way of higher learning).

This is why: It is considered to be racially insensitive to make such comparisons.

The evidence seems to indicate there might be differences between race-based differences in intelligence, but it's a relatively small effect. Given equal nutrition, education, etc people of all races should end up with relatively similar intelligence.

What I was getting at is that IQ tests are useful for comparing people within a society who have relatively equal backgrounds, but not for comparing individuals across cultures. Destitute Mexicans, poor Chinese farmers, and uncontacted Amazonian natives are going to score lower than the average middle-class Japanese/Americans/Europeans. There's no taboo in using those facts to compare cultures. Just don't point to their lower scores and say "X race of people is naturally less intelligent." There's not enough evidence to say that.

While I agree I must say knowledge and intelligence are also completely different things... so the quote doesn't fit.

You're absolutely right and it's because I deleted the latter part of what I wrote. The quote fit into it a little better but, the context of it would've pissed a few people off in here for sure so, I got rid of it. In hindsight, I should've looked it over before submitting.

That video in the OP's post claimed I was stupid anyway, so there we go. :D

This has nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with how the visual cortex handles moving monochromatic patterns. There's too many other factors involved in this as well. A fast flicker-fusion rate and larger fovea will detect the movement in both patterns more easily than a smaller fovea or someone with a lower flicker-fusion rate. Where someone's eyes are directed to the image also matters, for example, not everyone may look dead center on the screen. All this can prove is that some people are able to see the patterns more easily than others. Whether those people are more or less intelligent is going to be skewed by whether or not their eyes function exactly as the researchers are expecting them to. Besides. Someone can be dumb as a brick and be good at "Where's Waldo", whereas someone else may be a mathematical genius and have been born with a defective visual cortex. If any intelligence is to be questioned here I think it's on the part of the researchers.

Finally! Now I can just explain to people that I'm too smart for those Magic Eye books. That's why they never work.

Didn't Ars just do a 3 page article on something like this?

IQ tests specifically test focus-based intelligence skills. Wide-area viewing is the opposite of focus. This is a very believable result...however there will always be exceptions.

Think left-brain versus right brain, even though this metaphor is also fraught with errors.
