Test CPU without thermal grease?

I'm going to test 4 AM2+ cpu's outside of case.

Ive heard that it's not needed thermal compound when testing?

I'm going to put a Mugen II rev B on the cpu, I won't install it just put it on top of cpu and then swap cpu's.

I figured if no grease is needed it get's alot easier for me.
 
Bad idea, it only takes a few seconds of no contact to cook the cpu to a smoking mess. Grab a heat pad off of a video card or an old oem cooler and use that instead.
 
I second not a good idea. It's also not a good idea just to place the the heatsink on the CPU without installing it.
 
Just use a OEM stock cooler. So long you strap it down (as long there's pressure on the processors and HSF) you can test the processor. I've done it before. Idle temps always start out high (mid 30s), but if you're just testing to see if they're working, then it's all good.

But if you're stress testing, then put the actual TIM or heat pad.

Ok, I will put thermal compound on the cpu, but Is there not enough pressure when just putting the Mugen II rev B on it?

Yes the plan is to bios overclock the cpu's outside of case.

btw I have no idea what TIM is short for
 
TIM = Thermal Interface Material .... basically thermal compound.

If you're planning to overclock, no. Don't do it. Apply TIM properly, and then strap the HSF on it. Not just sit on it, STRAP it in.

I have these 3 coolers available: Ninja plus rev B, Mugen II rev B and freezer 64 pro.

Which of these is the least difficult to install?
As I will be testing 4 cpu's.
 
Don't you already know which one is easier to install, since you have them in your hand?
 
SO you are overclock testing or just testing for boot? If overclocking you want to use thermal paste if not you can safely boot with just a heatsink on it.

I have had the freezer for long time, as for the 2 I got them wery recently.

I dont have the other two but a tip I read is that the freezer pro 64 is easier to mount if you loosen the screws that keep the AM2 mount attached to the heatsink before you mount it.

hmm, I need to remove mobo so I remember how the freezer is, It might be difficult to tighten it again the AM2 mount to freezer once it's on the cpu.

I remember the freezer was a pain in the ass, took me forever to install when I built my pc.
 
I wouldnt worry about paste if not overclocking. I would worry about not installing the heatsink though!!!!

Mount it properly. To not do so is just plain lazy.
 
Instead of screwing around w/ aftermarket cooling, just use a stock cooler. Install/uninstall is like 10 seconds.
