test #5 errors in memtest

just recieved some XMS 3500LLPRO for the system in my sig. Seemed to work the first night of use but I didn't stress it to much. After I started pushing it (BF2 single and multiplayer) I got sudden restarts. At one point I got a long blue screen message with a long STOP #. Running the bootable memtest I get numerous test #5 errors. I changed the cas/ras/ect a couple times but to no avail. If anyone could give me some assistance as to what I should have my settings at or what else might be the problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if you have a bios update for your board. I had a similiar problem in which I'd error no matter what timings/speed my memory ran at. Flashing my bios fixed it.

Also, you could try memtest with one stick at a time as I assume you're using 2 sticks. That'd help find a bad stick.

Yes they're in dual channel. I thought about doing the individual test on each stick. I will do that tonight. It didn't look like the bios update for my board did anything useful so I never updated.

are you running them at stock or do you have any oc on them? if so return them to stock and try again.

try it anyway :p

also, how warm do the sticks get while memtesting?
let us know how the testing of each stick alone does

These are at stock speeds. Well slower. PC3200

memtested for 2.5 hours tonight with Both Sticks with No Errors after I flashed to the latest bios. I didn't mem test the sticks individually, ran out of time. After the 2.5 hours I noticed that memtest was showing my CPU @ 1838 MHZ w/ a FSB of 167MHZ? I restarted and Everest shows 2204.58 w/ a FSB of 200.41mhz.

I don't have a way to test temp of ram but I touched them and they're huge heatspreaders were cool to the touch after 2.5 hours of memtest.

I will memtest overnight and see what happens

On a side note I have noticed when I run my Asus Probe in the back ground and run a program like Everest @ the same time my alleged fan RPMs and/ or mobo/cpu temps make the asus probe freak out saying things are to slow/temps to high. This only happens occasionally while both programs are running and only lasts a few seconds @ a time. I originally thought it was my cheap raidmax PSU so I upgraded in anticipation of the new RAM but now that I have the Hiper 580w and it still does it, I'm thinking it's just a conflict of 2 programs monitoring some of the same stuff?

.

7hrs and 1350 test #5 errors later.
Guess I'll be testing them individually when I get home tonight.

They are @ 2.6V right now whicj=h is pretty low. One of the first things I tried to do was put em at 2.7V w/ no help.
Going to test em individually now.

Remember, Corsair uses proprietary IC's, so their stuff is kinda odd. Even my TCCD-based Corsair needs 2.8-2.9V to run stock, but they OC really well.

Individually tested w/ memtest86 V1.65
3hrs Zero errors and 9hrs on the other stick and no errors.
Any ideas?

your board isn't liking both sticks i guess? try different ram slots.. or loosening timings a bit.

My NF7-S (same chipset as your motherboard) gave me a ton of errors in test 5 with two sticks, one stick at a time worked fine, only thing that fixed it was to switch to a CPC-Off (2t) bios. Might want to look at that if the other suggestions given don't help.

Thread to read maybe - About A7N8X-Deluxe and OCZ ram, so you'd have to find a different bios for your motherboard.

Edit: CPC-Off Modded bioses

um, explain. afaik, corsair does NOT make their own ram chips ;)

OOOOPPS. Sorry, not the IC's, but the PCB's. They aren't standard Jedec, nor are they normal Brainpower- at least the ones I have.

Note to self, sleep BEFORE posting...

ah, yes.. i've noticed that too. it also seems that they use that same PCB almost everywhere. though i think i have seen corsair with some BP, i might be mistaken. ;)

Hell, with Corsair, you may have seen ANYTHING on their stuff. They've fallen hard as far as I'm concerned. My sticks are good, but they're the last I'll buy from them. Kingston is EXACTLY the same, also. Besides, doesn't someone else basically share the same office/products as Corsair under a totally separate name ?? ;)

For kicks I memtested both sticks today again. 11hrs and 11 passes later I get ZERO errors. The ONLY thing different is that the 2 sticks got switched around after I tested them individually. The mobo manual does show another way to have them but I will leave them alone and try to get it to mess up.
After keyword serching 3500LLPRO I found a review that mentioned how: "we find that 2.7V to be the sweet spot for these modules, even when overclocking."

Still having problems. I switched back to my old mismatched pc2100 in single channel and played BF2 for hours between last night and this morning then I pulled the old ones out and put in the new 3500s in the other "Recommended Memory Configuration" (A2 & B1) and started BF2 and played for a whole 3 minutes before PC completely rebooted. It has to be these sticks but is it timing cuz I'm not getting errors in memtest anymore?
Active Mode: Dual Channel (128-bit)
(CL): 2T (tRCD): 3T (tRP): 2T (tRAS): 6T (tRC):13T (tRFC): 15T (CR):1T
(tRRD): 2T

Any Ideas??

Try my idea yet? http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1028693964&postcount=16

No I must admit Oldbenwa that is the One thing I haven't tried. My updating to the 1013 bios was my 1st flash so I'm a lil hesitant to try something of that sort. I don't even know what CPC on/off is to be honest or how it would help my situation. Can you try to explain what the difference is with this bios to a noob? I was hoping Eclipse or anyone would give me some examples of "looser timings" to try.

try running with cas 2.5

if that doesn't help, switch CR (command rate, which is the same thing as CPC) to 2T, which is cpc disabled ;)

I'll try that tommorow. Maybe this info might help: I can run 1 of the sticks of 3500 and push it playin BF2 and I don't get any restarts (haven't tried swapping sticks and trying it).I tried running both sticks @ 2.8 and that didn't help so I have the 1 stick @ 2.7 now. Think I did try 2.5 b4. Keep the rest of the #s the same? Thanks E.

3200XL Revision 1.2 and up is TCCD on Brainpower, and any 4400c25 is also.

...we use and enhanced version of the Brain Power PCB for XMS4400C25 and have done so since day one with this part
I believe the C25 uses the Brainpower 815, which AnandTech calls "MLL E186014." Apparently the 3200XL also uses the 815, whereas G.Skill uses 808. It makes for some slightly different overclocking, from what I've seen; also, it may explain the higher voltage requirement in some cases.

Edit:
Il existe 2 types de PCBs Brain Power le 808 étant jugé beaucoup plus performant pour la montée en fréquence :

- B6U808
- B6U815

> Corsair XMS 3200 CMX512-3200XL PT = Brainpower 815
> G.skill G3200DSU2-1GBLE = Brainpower 808
> Patriot 9PDC1G3200+XBLK = Brainpower 815
> PQI PC3200 PQI3200-1024DBU = Brainpower 808
> PQI pc3200 PQI3200-512SBU = Brainpower 808
> OCZ pc3200 EL Platinum Revision 2 OCZ4001024ELDCPER2-K = Brainpower 808

Here's something you may find useful about your RAM (that means you too, Eclipse! :p), if it's the same 2GB kit in your sig.
http://www.overclockersonline.com/index.php?page=articles&num=325&pnum=3
Corsair did provide us with the info on the ICs used but Google nor the Infineon web site revealed any specifics. The part number provided to us from Corsair is Infineon 267N rev B. These are specially screened modules laid over a BrainPower PCB!

Edit:
I found a review of this RAM that you should really enjoy, Eclipse! *wink wink*
Since I could not get inside the modules to see the chips, Corsair was kind enough to let me know that they are Infineon rev B IC. This means that we are dealing with BE-5, which is 5ns ram

Is it possible that my asus board doesn't give me the option to switch comand rate to 2T nor CPC ON/OFF?
I switched Syst performance to used defined and mem freq to used def and I get the choice of switching active precharge delay, RAS to CAS delay, RAS precharge delay, and CAS Latency which I did put to 2.5T but it's late so will test (play BF2 for longer than 5 or 10 min without a restart) tomorrow.

hahaha, i'm the reason he has that quote in there. Rob does pretty good reviews :D

good info though MAV, thanks ;)

ps- this 3700EB is giving me a lot of issues over 2.7v at 3-3-2, even though i hit higher mhz at 3-2-2 with 3v
it's picky about some of the timings. i'll figure it out eventually i guess :D

Nickels, your a7n8x? it doesn't, i'd know, having one myself. you have to find a modded bios that has command rate set to 2T (or cpc disabled, depending on how you like your terminology)

Eclipse:
Take all the time you need; unfortunately I need to RMA both of my Buffalo sticks, a Micron-C DDR466 and a Hynix-B (BT-D43) DDR533- suspicious?
At least I still have my BH to play with, I'm still trying to stabilize my 256MB BH-6 at DDR570 (4.0V! ). I think it's overheating, since putting RAMsinks on just one side (the side with less airflow) got me another 4MHz or so. If I could get my hands on a watercooling loop and that Koolance block, I think I could eke out another 10MHz on it! Oh, and I traded someone else that weird OCZ pair I told you about for a gig kit of TMSP400 BH-5, so I hope I'll have that in a couple of weeks.
Have you managed to break 260-270 on the 3700EB, or is it being stubborn? I don't remember if I ever went up to 3v on it, so you may break my record.
Oh, and how's the XTC holding up?

OP:
See if you can borrow a different set of 1GB-sticks from anyone. This is a shot in left field, but your board may be having trouble dealing with the stress of two higher-density sticks.

Well I played BF2 for like 2 hrs straight with both sticks of 3500LLPro in and they are in dual channel mode and stuff seems fine. I put the CL @ 2.5 and voltage is @ 2.7V left the rest alone. I guess that command rate off bios will have to be the next step if this doesn't continue to pan out. :(

I had simmilar problems with my Corsair XMS, my resolution was i switched the ram from slots 1 + 3 to slots 2 + 4, then everything got better and it quit failling memtest.....dunno

I only have 3 slots in my mobo and I tried switching them and that didn't help. I have finally been able to log some time on BF2 with this setup with no restarts. All I did was switch cas las from 2 to 2.5. I'll try Tweeking it later. Right now I'm glad to have 2 gigs in dual channel functioning without crazy restarts when pushed.
