You know you are a nerd to the core when you see this picture and think “damn, I want one.”

Merry Christmas! This is a single photo from a Nikon D70s digital camera and is a 91 second exposure of a real functioning Tesla coil and is the result of perhaps 50 hours of preparation.

I want one too... but I don't think my college wouldn't like it to much... also if I was the guy in the picture I would stand that close in that out fit cus it looks like it conducts static very well and all I got to say is ouch...:D:D

Reminds me of some of my Fireworks Pics. I wonder if it can be done with Sparklers and Fireworks?

If you read the story, you will see that he HAD to stand that close as he is manipulating the sparks with a fishing pole inside the frame of the tree and star. Still cool, but since the main effect is achieved with a slow shutter speed, its not as cool as it would be if you could just turn the thing on and see a tree shape light up even without a camera. :)

I agree with xappie. It's definitely "cool" as an achievement, but it's not something one can just stick on the lawn and impress family and friends with.
A 91 second exposure with a moving filter to create the colours plus a mad man to manually position the probe to get the proper arcs is what it took to make the "tree".

wow that has to be the lamest santa suit ive ever seen. i would not let me kids near a santa dressed like that. down right creepy.
