Terminal Services - Please Explain?

I'm going to be purchasing software which requires Terminal Services to be run on the server so that a wireless device, such as a tablet pc, can run the software and save the data to the server. Could someone please explain to me in their own words what terminal services is please? Is it pretty much remote desktop? I've breifly googled this topic, but i would like to get a simpler definition on it. Also, I believe there are some licensing requirements, could someone explain that as well...
