My new build (two weeks old) uses an HIS Radeon 6950 2GB. Its not flashed to 6970 or overclocked. I had not played any games that really made full use of it until last night. I tried out Star Trek Online on max settings. I also downloaded MIS Afterburner to keep an eye on what the card is doing. While running the game, I noticed the card went to 100% and the temps hit about 80c. I think it was Celcius - 80 F wouldn't make any sense.

I wasn't worried about the temps and the game ran smooth. But since I haven't run a rig like this before, I wanted to make sure I wasn't ignoring a problem with the temps. My CPU (i5-2500K) only runs about 50c when stressed and that's overclocked to 4.3 GHz. The case has good air flow as well.

100% at 80c doesn't sound right. On auto at 80c it's at about 30%-40%. The card is meant to run hot. Even 90c is fine.

I set up a custom fan profile though with MSI Afterburner. It keeps the card below 80 at all times. I OC'd my card. It's usually at 40%

You have a similar setup to mine. I run my 6950 at a constant 40% fan speed while gaming and the highest load temp I've ever seen is 71C. Typically it'll load around 65-70C.

My card has unlocked shaders and is overclocked to Overdrive limits of 840 core, 1325 ram on default voltage

Ambient temp is around 65-68F (18C)

Thanks guys.

I'll have to watch the temps tonight. I know it was hovering around the 70s and I'm pretty sure I saw it peak to 80, but I'll pay closer attention tonight.

The room temps aren't high - between 65-70F - and the HAF X case offers plenty of air flow. I don't have the side fan running on the case, but I don't know how much that would help.

Sounds exactly like mine. Another reason I had custom fan is because of Crossfire.
