Temperature probe placement question.

Oh dang, those are old school. I didn't know they even make them anymore, well from my P4C days, I had it between the IHS & heatsink, closest to the edge of the IHS

Doesn't that limit heat transfer though?
 
I just heard a lot that putting the probe between the chip and the heatsink reduces heat transfer, I'm planning on overclocking quite a bit and i need the chips as cool as possible. I'd like maximum heat transfer in case I don't get a G0 q6600 chip, is there a way to put the probe under the chip or does the side give ok readings?
