Temperature issues. Which temps to trust?

Ok been having some temp. issues with my new C2D build. I have an E6400 at stock everything with an Abit Quadgt.

Ok. The first weird part. My temps at idle at stock everything is around 47-50C with the stock heatsink AND with an Ultra90.

The above temps are according to Speedfan and Coretemp. How trustworthy are these? I mean, from my experience, they should be all using the same diode right? They should both be recording the temps from the same place?

Well, if I load up Abits own program UGURU OR if I reboot and go to my bios, it says my temps are about 39-40C. Thats quite a big difference. I would think the bios is more likely correct over two software programs? The temps are not dropping 7-10C within 10 seconds of a reboot right? Im thinking I need an RMA of thise mobo.

im having a temp issue too!

my cpus idle at like 33 then when i put load on im getting temps of 50-60! and i am using a tuniq 120 with e4300 STOCK. This is ridiculous.

If you want to understand Core 2 Duo temps then it's time to do some reading. A lot of reading.

It may not answer your questions but at least it should explain a few of the mysteries.

For those that don't like to read too much, use CoreTemp 0.95. It can be set to read the on cpu digital thermal sensor ( DTS ) directly. It is 100% accurate but it is not an absolute temperature that people like. Instead it is a temperature relative to the Intel maximum safe operating temperature for your Core 2 Duo.

With my present 3640 MHz overclock, at idle I have 54 degrees of head room until my processor reaches its maximum temperature which is officially called TjMax.

That maximum temperature is not documented by Intel which is where all the confusion comes in. The DTS is documented. As your processor heats up the DTS decreases. My E6400 is Orthos stable at 3200 MHz up to DTS = 2. At 3400 MHz I need to leave about 15 degrees of headroom when running Orthos to maximize stability and at 3600 MHz I need 25 degrees of headroom for Orthos stability.
