Temp for Athlon XP and Duron?

Hi,

1. What would be the normal range for an Athlon XP and Duron?

2. What is the limit? What is the temp the CPU should never go up to?

3. How do I lower the CPU temp?
 
1) 40-50c

2) Past 70c and I think 85c is the failure point

3) New cpu cooler, maybe made out of copper with some arctic silver thermal paste. Good case ventilation. And clearing the case of clutter might help too.
 
1. My Duron is constantly at 53C. Is that a danger?

2. My Athlon XP is at an unbelievable 89-92C!!! What is happening to it? (It still runs, but I dare not to let it run it anymore; afraid it would fry.)

3. My heatsinks are less than a year old. How often do I have to change this generally? Copper, but no artic silver thermal paste.

4. How do I use the thermal paste?

2. it should never get hot enough to make it crash. and that is ridiculously hot. I would guess that your heatsink is making very poor contact with the cpu.

3. Depends on what the heatsink is. get a good one (read: thermalright) and you shouldn't need to change it

Sounds like your HSF isn't installed right, or the fan isn't working. Even my cheap Foxconn HSF keeps my AMD at 43c under 100% cpu load.
 
2. I bundled the Athlon XP 2000+ with the heatsink it came with in the package; OEM. I have never tampered with the CPUs by OC'ing them. I have no idea what is making the temperature go that high.

3. My Duron 1.6 GHz has a Volcano 8. If I recall, it was spinning at 4,800RPM. The constant temperature is 53C. Do I have to get a new heatsink?
 
no, take it off, clean off both surfaces (cpu + heatsink) with isypropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol). make sure it's 91% concentration or higher. no 70% crap.

read through the link that goes to arctic silver's webiste carefully and make sure you follow their instructions exactly. the instructions apply to all thermal paste.. you don't have to have as5.

a high end heatsink is not required, though durons do have a tendancy to run hot. this is just the nature of the chip. that athlon xp definitly needs help though. if it came with the stock heatsink, it means you have a wax based thermal pad, which will be hell to take off, and will end up reducing the cooling performance when you do remount the heatsink as i have told you above.
 
heat up the heatsink as hot as you can get it and use a hard but non-abrasive material to get the wax off (brush for washing dishes works well). the ideal way to remove the wax is to lap the heatsink, but i don't think you want to take the effort to do that :D

wax isn't really... bad, it's just that it definitly doesn't give good temps, and it's nearly impossible to remove once you use it. though never remove the heatsink and put it back on with those thermal pads..
 
I agree with ditching the wax TIM pad, they are garbage...

I use arctic cermique on my XP2200+ thats running slightly overclocked, max temp in the middle of summer is 45*C running Prime95...

I use a bus disconnect software for Idle and it idles at room temp..in the mid 20's.

It's only good up to a sempron 2800+...the spec sheet lists the semprons as ~55W cpu's though they probably are not...Look for a similar cooler that can take on a Palomino 2100+ (72W) or a XP3200+ (77w)

I've got the whisperock and can vouch for it's quality. It keeps my xp-mobile@2400mhz under 40c full load (with as5.) Can't beat it for the price.
