Temp discrepancy between two identical cards?

Could someone please explain this?....

I have two HD4850s....Today I've been running each one separate on it's own (in the same top PCIE slot) and noticed a huge discrepancy between idle temps....keep in mind these cards are in the same slot, same room, same environmental conditions...

The first GPU had the following readings (average):
GPU Diode (DispIO) 46.8°C
GPU Diode (MemIO) 55.7°C
GPU Diode (Shader) 53.7°C

Now, the second one I'm currectly running:
GPU Diode (DispIO) 44.0°C
GPU Diode (MemIO) 90.0°C <---- :eek:
GPU Diode (Shader) 73.2°C <---- :eek:

Why the large discrepancy? It is just luck of the draw the way they come out of the factory? Some luckier cards get more accurate readings? Or should I suspect something's wrong? I just touched the sinks themselves and I'm more inclined to believe they're only as warm as the first GPU reported.

What makes even less sense is that I just finished reapplying the RAM and VRM sinks on card #2....card #1 is running cooler VRMs without even the sinks stuck on.

The only consistency between the two are the core temps.

Any explanation is appreciated!
 
If I read it right, to the touch they both feel around the same temperature? If thats true, I'd just assume that GPU2s diodes are FUBARed. You didnt report instability, so I wouldn't worry. Get a temp gun and measure the temps externally. If card 2 is actually significantly warmer than card 1, RMA it if you can.
