So I recently purchased two Intel Xeon X5550 chips for a new build I am doing.

I got them at a really good price....and when I opened the packaged I saw they are labeled "ES"
Now I know why they were cheap.

Should I be worried about using these?
Should I send them back?

I got them for about 50% off retail, so im not sure I want to send them back.


What do you guys think?
 
Not necessarily, but there's really no telling what the samples purpose was intended to do if you're only getting them second(or more)hand. ES's can be used for all sorts of levels of the hardware industry; from early batch samples intended for demo use only, to descrete/add-on vendors who want to test compaitability.

Chances are you won't have any problems.. Either way, if the item was purchased from eBay (or similar) and if the seller didn't initially (or intentionally) state that the chips were ES, I'd contact him; or, at the very least, reflect his deception on his seller rating/comments.
 
They should work. However, selling of ES chips is illegal and violates the Intel NDA that must be agreed to in order to obtain ES CPUs in the first place. ES chips are Intel property, so technically they can ask for them back at any time. You can try contacting Intel customer support and see if they will replace the chips you bought with equivalent retail parts, and you can contact the seller you purchased the chips from and try to resolve the issue with them.
