Technology Gone Seriously Wrong

That is not entirely true.

Look at the test they did with a smart car hitting a concrete barrier head on at 70mph. The cars are made like race cars, with steel tube frames. Much stronger than the normal uni-body designs you see on most new cars. The small cars are actually stronger than most full size cars, but they lack Crumble zones. Crumble zones help reduce the g-forces being transferred to the occupants. Ie reduce damage on your internal organs from flying around in your body on a sudden impact.

But those crumple zones are a huge safety feature, although they head on barrier test is all well and good but the side impact tests showed the smart car going airborne when struck by even a mid sized sedan.

Head on is all well and good, but what about side impact and angled impact? And the problem with the crumble zone is huge. A lot of people don't realize how crucial crumble zones can be in saving lives, and reducing the total impact on your body.

Meh, Americans and Italians are the only people on Earth who think getting from A to B cheaply and reasonable quickly is at the bottom of the list of priorities.

Small car or Big car it really doesn't matter when your going 50mph+. As for the smart car going air borne when hit from the side or at a angle, do you really think your suv is going to stay on 4 wheels? Nah they gonna flip 9 times out of 10. If your worried about the safety of a car, why drive at all? At least in the smart car your surrounded by a steel cage, with low odds of getting crushed or some other aliment. Sure the g-forces might get ya, but at least your brain isn't part of the ceiling. If i had my choice between crumple zones or a steel cage i would pick the steel cage every time.

Anyways that's how the cookie crumbles.

First, it's a concept car. The flying motion etc... Will never make it to production. It's just being used to show off the possible technology. For instance a user programmed gesture to open a car door. With a dongle in your pocket within range you would never need to get out keys. This car will never see production but a lot of it's fearures will.
Second, a car this size doesn't need crumple zones because it's not meant to be driven on highways or interstates etc... It's a commuter car for cities where parking is at a premium. The fastest you should get into an accident in a car like this is around 35mph. I say should because there will be morons out there who do take these onto highways where in a high speed collision will die. I am always puzzled when i see a smart car on the highway. They aren't designed for that. You would also be amazed at how durable these car are in crashes. With the latest frame and body technology you don't need large crush zones for a coule of reasons. The first being there is less mass to slow in an impact and second being the new frames are designed to channel the energy of an impact around the driver. Crumple zones are for absorbing and bypassing the driver, these smaller frames disperse the energy differently.
Now would i want to be in any collision in a car this small? Hell no. I'm also not saying these cars are stronger than current cars or that they take impacts better. But that doesn't mean there is no merit to their design and concept. These cars are what make new production cars better.

I've seen barely longer then a meter long smart cars take a better impact at 60MPH then most chinese built full sized trucks take at 20mph

Not a joke, lots of tech goes into a smart car

So the doors don't close all the way, and it uses facial recognition technology and you have to flap your arms to open the thing. I can explain why this is so full of fail with one word:

Get rid of the "technology integration" and flapping your arms like a moron, slap a decent price sticker on this and it might be a great alternative for people who commute by themselves. I drive 3 miles to a train station (take the commuter train to work)--this would be a nice alternative to the crappy 3 city miles each way I put on my regular gas car--worst car usage behavior, that is.

This is of course assuming it won't get crushed like a bag of Doritos in city-speed accidents...
