I think a technology forum should be added to the hobbies forum (or maybe in the real life stuff section with the hobbies forums).

The things to discuss in this forum would be technology including:
Space related stuff
Gadgets (not necesarilly related to computers)
Budding Technlogical improvements (better batteries, faster computers etc...)

I actually came to this section of [H] to suggest something similar. I suppose I might as well ride your thread...

Has there been any consideration of adding a "science" section? Now that you've suggested "technology", what about killing two birds with one stone and adding a "Science & Technology" section? I agree about placing such a section under Real Life Stuff or [H]obbies.

My specific motivation for this suggestion is from threads like this very spirited discussion of hydrogen as a fuel source. It ended up having very little to do with cars (and didn't have too much to do with cars in the first place, really), and could have lived very happily in a Sci/Tech section.

(Edit: This is another example of a thread that made me wish we had such a section...)

hmmm.. what is this whole forum about? not just this thread. i would say technology

Yeah but this is different...

The forum that they suggest would be somewhere were you could discuss about new investigations, tech development, etc. ie. There is nowhere in the forums to discuss about Hawkins discoveries on Black Holes, or Feynmans Sums over History, etc...

Hell if we have a car forum, why not this? It wouldnt be crowded or hang the servers down since people will just casually post... And it will make the place a little more geekier... In MajorGeeks' words, Geek it till it Mhz... :p

Edit: I wrote would instead of wouldnt in the last paragraph, already fixed.

so you want a black holes thread?

this forum i believe is the help and helping of computers. the little parts at the end are just add ons. as you can see the main part of this is computers hint video cards motherboards overclocking cooling case modding amd intel processors operating systems games digital artwork the end stuff as you read above the threads is the thread discription where it says real life stuff

damn good idea... has my vote.

(if my small post count has nothing to do with it) :D

I don't see why there shouldn't be a SCI/TECH forum. Yes, it's a computer enthusiast site, but we already have a seperate forum to talk about cars, music, anime, etc. Why not add one more for the science buffs? ;)

i think this is a great idea, especially with the opportunity for debate and discussion on new and upcoming technologies.

Usually I don't get around to reading up on the latest ground breaking technology...

This would make it easy to do. :) yes

sci & tech is toataly related to computers, fundamentaly.

more so than some of the forums that are already here.

I'd love to see this forum.

So what's the admin say on this? I haven't seen any of them post about it. Even if it was a sub-forum I think most people will be happy.

i agree totally. I suggest the thread starter pm someone important if you want this to get done.

You have my support, I would love this forum.

You have my vote as well. The benefits of having this forum, which have been stated, seem to sound very nice. I don't see how it could go wrong! :)

Oh yeah, and it should be, as HorsePunchKid said, a Science & Technology forum.

Agreed. It specifies the forums scope a tad better than just "technology" (99% of this site is about "technology" already).
It has a Popular Mechanics feel to it.

makes you wonder why the people who voted for "Who cares about technology?" are here, doesn't it :p

Hey guys, I PM'd Kyle-Bennet a few days ago before most of you replied.
I am extremely glad to see this response. :D He never pm'd back at all, which is really curious to me. should I keep pm'ing him or do you guys think more/other ppl pm'ing would be more effective?

I think everyone should bother him (and other admins) till they have to give some kind of response. (wasnt someone in the hospital for some time last week, I hope that isnt what happened?...)

Anyways everyone politely pm the main admins (the ones high enough up to make this change), and make sure to link to this thread.

only PM him once. he will see the thread. remember he has life outside [H]

Yeah, definately don't get a group of people to PM him.

Just leave it, he'll eventually see/hear about it.

Please, people, DON'T pm him.

really?

:p

Now for real, it would be wise not to flood the admins with PMs. I dont think it would affect negatively the purpose of this thread (they dont behave in that manner) but it sure pisses people off to have to organize 50+ PMs saying the same freakin thing....

Two things:

1. I hate loaded polls.

2. Do NOT bug Kyle by sending him mass PMs. He's got enough crap to worry about; this thread is quite sufficient and you can see quite easily that he reads this part of the forums very often.

That said, I voted for a Science and Technology forum, In The News used to fill that role to a certain extent (quite nicely, I think), but was cut when it got too Soap Boxy on other topics.

As for not opening a separate Sci & Tech forum, I can see several arguments against it as well, the primary being can it generate enough content to justify itself. If not, General Mayhem's at the bottom of the page for all of you off-topic needs.

How exactly is the poll loaded?

Also, what would it hurt to create the forum, then sit back and see how it does? If it doesn't pan out and very few posts go in there, they can be moved to genmay and the thing can be canned, no big deal. Why would you think many people would want to pay to post about Sci-Tech in the genmay forum??

Yes. I was wondering what that hole in the [H]ardforums was!

Who cares about technology?

Those seem to be two unbiased options to you?

How about:

Yes, a sci & tech forum would be great!

No, a sci & tech forum is unecessary at this time

QFT (Quoted For Truth). The poll is loaded... though the idea of a Sci & Tech sub-forum does merit consideration. I voted no to balance out the poll's bias, though I think it wouldn't hurt make a sub-forum under Hobbies or General. There is a lot of tech stuff that happening that doesn't fall strictly into the [H]ard's main domain (computing) but would still interest most of us. Anyway, that's just my 00110010c.

so you voted no, but you still think wouldnt hurt? how much more could one possibly contradict themselves?

the reason why the poll is the way it is, is because ppl want the forum! obviously ppl that are not interested are not even going to click and read about it. they didnt vote, that is their problem... this poll is not loaded. ill admit the wording isnt the best, but it obviously means for you to choose yes or no.

I edited the first post
1=yes
2=no

It's not like this is an actual legal document or our poll necesarilly matters anyways.

Just relax figure out whether you wanna talk about technology and science or not and then vote, i.e. dont worry about the wording.

yes, though a i think better name is needed. tech is too vague, moderators will have a blast with it :)

-Next Generation
-Cutting Edge Techs
-Non Computer Technology

<will edit in future seuggestions>
or just make alot of sub forums.

and of course, a theoretical physics sub forum for nerds to debate on whether Spock or Lt. Cmdr. Data is correct about time travel.
