I got me a tech job. I work at a non-profit place that fixes computers. ( get paid though as people pay to get their comps fixed) What software/Drivers should I bring with me? I Copyed my XP Pro , 98 SE CD (they have keys for it it's they key that matters right?).
 
For a start, I'd recommend the most common driver sets...

MB:
Intel Inf / AMD Inf / VIA Inf / SIS Inf

nVidia / ATI / Intel / s3

Aud
Creative / RealTek (?)

IDE/RAID
SI / Intel / Other

NIC
Intel / Broadcom

I would bring a cd of spyware removal tools and antivirus software, with the most up to date definitions. Also, go to sarc.com and download all the virus removal tools you can find.

Also a copy of ghost, or some imaging tool if you have it.

Also a disk partitioning tool too. Something like partition magic.
 
if theyre paying someone to fix a computer, you best have net access so you can get drivers for their shitty emachines all-on-board comps
 
Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware. You'll need those, 50% percent of issuses people face w/ their computers is from spyware. Those will fix them right up. And for when you open the case for a hardware repair, get your self a ground harness, its a little wrist band with a jump clamp that you connect to the computer case, to ground yourself. It will keep you from frying their machines. Otherwise have a computer with internet connection ready so that if you need drivers you can download them on the spot.
 
As kronchev said, you'll NEED 'net access because of older machines, and theres a lot of hardware out there that use drivers not included on OS CD's, plus sometimes repairing just involves reinstalling or updating drivers. I've accumulated over 6GB worth of drivers for customers myself in just the last 8 years.
 
Yes I have net access, I don,t use a ground strap. I work on donations we get it needs a modem pull one out of the plastic :mad: bin unprotected same with video, sound , network cards most of them work though go figure :D

Save it to a CD, and blackmail him with it. You'll get more out of it...


And I'm not sure if anyone listed CS-Shredder, but its also good to have. Anti-virus software, service packs, ghost or imagecast.
 
I been a tech for just about 5 years now. You'll need a tool set also.

You could probably get by with a #2 and #3 phillips, a #2 regular, and maybe some torx drivers (if you are working on compaq's)
 
Hardware-wise:
(magnetic) screw drivers, Torx, multimeter (cheap-o, something that you can just test a molex with)

extra screws, lots of canned air, maybe some slot covers

I Usually carry around an extra PCI NIC, and old 10Mb ISA Nic (hey, you *never* know) a PCMCIA NIC, and a USB NIC. Just in case I need to access a network and the PC doesn't have a network card.

a mini-mag flashlight

some network cables

external USB/Parallel CD-RW

my laptop with Win98/Win2k/FreeBSD :/

software wise:

Spyware removal (SpyBot, Ad-Aware, HiJack THis)
Anti-virus (AVG usually since it's free)
Partition magic
Norton Utilities
bootable Win98SE CD, "live" win2k CD

Bootable CD with NTFS-DOS.
3.5" boot floppies also


Basically, I carry around a small workshop when I need to do field work.
 
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU WILL NEED.


an air compressor, so you can bloww the crap out of the inside and rid them of mothballs, dust, cigar ash and pubs.
 
get yourself a data-vac, about $50, it'll be helpful when you want to dust out the computers.

Also, a magnetic screwdriver and a crapload of drivers. And a pair of needle-nose pliers. Actually, one of those little toolkits you can get at most computer stores should work out pretty well, except you'll need to pick up the magnetic screwdriver separately.
 
I have net acces an air compresser. Is there a tool I can use to partition and format SCSI hardrives? we just got donated a bunch of HP Kayak servers with SCSI hard drives but win 98 and Fdisk will not decet it. XP will but I do not want to install xp on it
 
um.. Am I wrong for saying, if you get a job somewhere, shouldn't your company supply you with your tools, etc... ? I can't remember the last job I took that required me to bring my own tools, desk, computer, I mean sure I bring my lunch, but come on lol.
 
They gave me a basic set of tools. They also have an XP CD but I prefer to bring my own. Software tools so I don't have to DL/ask them for their only copy of it. And is there a bootable program that let me acces Fdisk/format SCSI disks? I can format it using my XP cd but is there a more direect and better way?
 
the most important thing to bring to ANY tech / computer job:

MUSIC.

i find my 20gig iPod works nicely.
 
Bring as many known working parts that you can for when your troubleshooting. Your going to be swapping parts many times to determine the cause of several problems. Air can is GREATLY reccomended as many computer users dont clean their computers worth a crap.

CD with spyware removel, Autopatcher, Window Service Pack, Nvidia/ATI drivers, free virus scanners, Stinger, winzip, stuff like that. Floppy disk with the windows password resetter.

Edit: My reading comprehension sucks today I guess. I just noticed that KaosDG did list a multimeter.
