I have had a few questions for a long time. Here they go.

What computer component is the cause for tearing? The monitor? Vid card? Settings?

Aside from AA and such in games, how much of a performace decrease is seen in a higher resolution? Small or large?

When I turn on vsync in games, I get this really annoying mouse lag. Can I prevent that while leaving vsync on?
 
Bump, oh cmon I know that one of you can at least answer one or two of these three questions....
 
I know this is in here somewhere, you just have to look for it. I would say the best place for you to start looking for the problem is in the monitor.
 
Your refresh rate is the cause of tearing. The lower the refresh rate, the worse the tearing. LCD's are limited to 60Hz, so they typically have more tearing problems than CRT's.

The second question is kind of hard to answer, so I'm not sure.

As far as I know, you can't get rid of the mouse lag associated with VSync.
 
How could ALL lcd's be limited to 60fps???? If that was true then there would be no point to LCD's faster than 16ms, correct?

Even at the refresh rate of 60 Hz, it does not mean 16ms will give perfect result. Response time of 16ms does not mean the pixels will change instantly in 16ms after they gets the next refresh. In fact, it takes full 16ms to gradually change from one color to another, meaning your eyes will still see the pixels gradually changing, regardless of the frame rate/refresh rate. So, 60 Hz monitors or even 24 fps movies will benefit from 2ms response time.

Besides, in real world, the monitor’s rated response time is not the average response time and definitely not the maximum response time, so a 16ms rated monitor is more like 25ms on an average, and could be as high as 80ms in some cases.
 
To put more confusion to the discussion, some LCD's have internal frame buffer/processor that will convert any refresh rate to a display-native refresh rate and feed its panel at that single refresh rate (most likely 60hz) regardless of the video card's output refresh rate.

Meaning you can set the output to 56hz, 70 hz, or 75hz, and the monitor will sync to the signals just fine, but the actually refresh rate will always be the display-native 60 hz. Also, Feeding non-native refresh rate to these displays will cause motion judder (15 frames will be thrown away each second). It can also cause tearing.

I know that because my NEC 2070NX will judder unless I manually force it to run at 59.3 hz! My Samsung 173P, on the other hand, is fine with any refresh rate.
 
So with my RealSync 17' 12ms on DVI, is there anything I can do to improve performance through settings?
