All right guys, the parents are getting rid of their old Dell and I am putting my current cpu+mobo+512 mb ram for them. This still leaves me with my hard drive, geforce 6800, case, floppy+DVD/CDRW and the Aspire 420W PSU. So, you guys at team 33 will build my new boxen. I am looking at a max $400-450 budget and will be getting this rig in August.

I was looking at a s939 system, but after looking at some of the dual processors I wanna see if I can build a decent folding/gaming system that can decently o/c and that I will not upgrade in the next 2-3 years. So can you guys recommend me some parts? :D

How about a Athlon64, 3500, winchester core (90nm) $270ish, and either a good NF3 board (MSI Neo2 Platinum) or one of the newer NF4 boards that support AGP cards? That ought to come in about $400ish...put an Thermalright XP90 heatsink and a good 92mm fan, and you're all set to O/C.

My setup will do 2.6ghz on air, stable enough to game, but I have to back it down a bit for Folding.

Bill suggested a nice system for sure. Keep in mind the Venice core is about to be released, as in should be available by Monday or so. It has been shown to give about a 2 Meg higher over clock and has an improved (fixed?) memory controller.

As if that isn’t enough the socket 939 dual cores will be out shortly. That will give you a true SMP machine with a single socket, as in two real instances of folding running. Much better then HT for sure.

Now it’s a matter of your patience ;) :D

unfortunatly it looks like the dual cores are gonna be $550 itself so it will be out of budget. I was looking at a couple of Xeons and an Asus PC-DL but it might be slow for gaming. However, the Venice combo is still on the back of my mind.

Monarch is taking orders, prices on their site. The egg usually takes a bit longer

I just put together a Duallie Xeon for pretty cheap...

Anyways, s939 has the Venice cores, pre-order only atm. Should be better overclockers than the Winchesters.

I put in my vote for this too.

I going the dual xeon route with mr_ouija.
You can get an ASUS PC-DL motherboard for $197.95 at ZipZoomFly - with free shipping.
It user standard (read cheap) 184 pin DDR and has an AGP 8x vid slot on it. And it can use a standard ATX PSU.
The Xeons can come in all flavors fairly cheap on ebay... in matched pairs.
mr_ouija just got a pair of 2.0 Ghz LV's for about $150.... I just got a pair of 1.6Ghz's for $75.00 ( I got the ok stepping not the great overclocking stepping - but I should be able to get 2.4Ghz out of these easy)
If you don't want to OC then I saw a pair of 2.8's go for about $200.00.

And you can upgrade just by watching ebay for cheap CPU's :D

that's what I was thinking but I am curious as to how good these are at gaming and such. Anyway it will be plenty of research on the Xeons.

Just out of curiosity, how old a dell are we talking? Is it in the parts swap thread yet? ;)

I got mine for $179 w/ Free shipping @ Monarchcomputer.com. Go there early in the morning, as their prices seem to change as the day progresses. :)

what kind of power supply am I looking at here? I know I will need to buy those server PSUs but not sure what kind of amps/wattage I need.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't. You could also get a PCP&C, of course, and that WOULD handle it, but it's $200....

I'm using the 350w version of this on my machine, with a 2.4c, 9000 pro, dvd burner, 200gb seagate. Stable as heck, fairly quiet too.

30A on the 12V line is what you need.

I have 28A on my 12V line and i am beginnning to stress out my PSU, it is now undervolting, but not much.

This is of course running 100% load 24/7.

So how is this brand.
I have not heard anything bad about it and it has 18A on a dual 12v line. Also $83 so I am not paying an arm and a leg for it.

You could basically rip apart any spare cord you have.

And use 1 strand of wire.

Ex: Telephone, electric, network, cord on mouse, headphone cord, etc.....

Saving money is always more better!!!!
Thanks!!
:D

thanks for all the help. Now when I get back it will be either a Venice, dual Xeon or the Athlon X2 rig depending on how much money I have. :D
