TBS Pause Advertisements

Does anyone remember when there were television shows on television? I do. And those days were glorious. All the entertaining content you could ever dream of with an occasional break to get youself something to eat real quick or go to the bathroom. Or if you didn't need to, you could sit and watch the short cute intermission advertising a new product you might want to try.

Now? Its like the Home Shopping Channel took over every channel that comes through the cable box. There's more commercials than there is television show! Its like watching Youtube and just watching nothing but commercials people have uploaded for your viewing pleasure.

I don't watch TV unless its on On-Demand. I can tolerate what little commercial/movie trailer preview it may have before my actual movie. That's about the extent of it. After that, a TV for me is just a way to play games.

Advertising in general now is pissing me off. Its seriously like from coast to coast this place has become one giant marketing scheme. Ads are everywhere! On buses, on bus stations, on billboards, t-shirts, pants, shoes, tattoos, and now they're putting commercials IN the television shows. When the HELL did we deem this alright? Its insanity! They sell these cute little decals for cars too. You see all the popular names for aftermarket cars typically, and more of them end up on a daily driver than real professionals have in actual sponsors putting their name on their damn cars.

between this and the "researching" capabilities of new billboards watching your reactions to the advertising, I don't know why the hell we should even feel safe from marketing throwing itself in our faces when we attempt to go outside our own homes. Oh yeah that's right, because we can't even watch television without being told that we need to go buy something.

Seriously, is the commission really that good for good advertising?

Soon we'll have toilets that will tell us when we should consider buying more toilet paper, and what "9 out of 10 professional asswipers prefer".

That said, I'm going to go play video games. The old variety, that didn't have support for ad placement.

eh. if it wasn't for advertising revenue there would be no reason to produce television shows, pay big money for sporting events, google would not have kick ass products for free. You think TBS is bad try watching a soccer game on one of the spanish channels. Having said that TBS shoves their shows down your throat (remember last years baseball playoffs with the FrankTV commercials) but interrupting a show is a new low. I wonder if the owners of the rights to the shows can do anything about it.

tell that to the BBC
Doctor Who is one of the few shows i watch any more

I absolutly loath promos. And I loath intrusive animated station logos.

I'M WATCHING THIS SHOW NOW! I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FRIG ABOUT WHAT'S COMING UP NEXT OR WHAT IS ON NEXT YEAR DURING THE HARVEST OF THE MOONS ZENITH LESBIAN FLOWER PRIDE PARADE!@!!!!!@@!@!!
@!

I remember the good old days when there weren't commercials when you went to the movies. Sigh.

Which is just one of the reasons I don't go to theaters anymore, along with 6-7 trailers that I don't give a fukin' shyt about, rude people, cell phones ringing and cost of a ticket (food).

But yeah, that commercial crap is just that. It's fukin' bullshyt along with the stupid fukin' ticker data streaming across the bottom of the screen.

JFC! Now I'm spun up.;)

I too was quite horrified the first time I saw this, which seems to be the first time any of you did too. Aside from about the 5 to 6 increasingly intrusive banner add's that were quite literally taking up at least 30% if not 40% of the screen space, then the entire show just stops? I had no idea wtf was going on.

What I dont think these advertisers realize is this type of intrusive advertising TURNS CUSTOMERS AWAY. As soon as I saw the ad for that show I immediately barked out loud "F*** THAT SHOW, because of this annoyance I will make specific effort NOT to watch it!!" And this is no joke. I dont even know what the show is about, but I will purposely avoid watching it just out of principle.

I think these emotion perceptive billboards might finally help advertisers understand what not to do. When they see customers balk, look in disgust, shun away from, maybe they'll suddenly see "oh wow, all these advertising attempts are really quite poor, we seriously need to re-adjust".

And about movie ad's, yes what the hell is up with that! It was only 2-3 years ago that this started. I remember the first one, think it was for coke or maybe Ford. I was like "ummm.. I pay $9 to see this film, that covers the cost of theater ownership and the cost to produce this film. So exactly what is this advertiser needed for? What cost is is helping the industry recover by placing an ad here? I didnt pay money to see ad's, I paid money to see a movie. Oh I get it, the theaters suddenly realized they could increase profits that much more if they sold this space to advertisers. So, what are they doing with this new sudden surge in profits? My theater is still the same size. Same seats for the last 10 years. Same sound system, same food, same movies. Only difference now is it takes me 20 minutes longer to get to my movie. Well then, guess the only benefactor here are the CEO's who dreamed up this idea, no doubt enjoying their day off on the yacht docked near one of their mansion's. Thx boys, glad I could help you afford all that".

Just wait, one day you will see banner ad's DURING the movie you paid for. Just watch the film Minority Report. Their vision of an entirely advertisment ridden future is eerily real.

The advertising method in Minority Report gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I saw this during family guy the other night. I found it extremely annoying even though it was just before the regular commercial breaks. To be completely honest, I hate all the little adverts that pop out at the bottom of the screen while a show is in progress.

6 months to a year after the last episode of the season airs? Yea, great solution.

Heh, I'm not trying to be mean, but this isn't the superbowl we're talking about, it's re-runs on TBS. Seeing a TV show, or any show that you really enjoy has, unfortunately, got its price.

Part of the cost is monetary, and part is in wait time from production to distribution.

Maybe the problem isn't the commercials, it's the business model of the networks themselves?

Are you aware that's because the BBC don't have ads because every household who has a TV has to pay £139 a year for a licence?

(Unless you're referring to BBC America, having less obnoxious ads, I'm not that familiar with that channel)

I saw the Bill Engvail pause ad last night... wow. And right after that, like 10 seconds later, they show the commercial for the show again.. jesus fucking christ.

Side-note annoyance - ads are just fucking everywhere online. I mean, I understand the need for revenue, but seriously, this shit wasn't in place a few years ago. I think the worst offender (imo) is ign.com. I hate that site more than ever now.

yup and id ranther pay that then have shitty ads like this
just as a note i also watch PBS stuff to like NOVA
more people should support there local PBS stations
then we might have better ad free tv in the US

I get everything I need now via netflix or the DVD store. Guess I'm lucky I'm not a sports fan. Enjoy your dwindling, ad-saturated target demographics, marketing drones.

Whats worse is, I havent even bothered to look at the youtube comments, but I'm sure theres probably plenty of people saying "who cares!" or even worse "I LIKE the ads!" Making the fight that much harder.
