1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mostly gaming and web browsing. I do some page layout and design, but probably not on this computer.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
1200... shipping not included

3) Where do you live?
Southern Missouri

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
everything. Case on down.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Only the monitor.

6) Will you be overclocking?
Not necessarily

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
24 inch WS acer. Might look at a 2nd monitor, but that's not included in the price for now.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Whenever the return comes in, so probably within 2 weeks?

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
None that I'm aware of.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
No, but that's not something I'm including. Have several student friends that I may use to pick up Win7...

My main concern with this build is quiet. The puters we have no are in our bedroom, and they keep the wife up (somewhat). So I'm wanting something a little bit quieter if possible. That's all I can think of offhand.

You want a quiet gaming computer for the bedroom?

We will need to build this after FEB 1, as all of the monthly specials will change.

Antec 300
Xeon X3440
4gb ram
Corsair H50
650 corsair psu
Yate Loon low rpm fans
samsung 500gb HDD
XFX 5850

Doesn't have to be super duper mondo quiet, like watercooled quiet. Even then, I can add certain things later on/over time.

That's a sub-$1000 build isn't it?

I'd go all out with an i5 build and add a fast 128GB SSD for the OS/Apps/Games.

I'd also get a much better case than a 300 (which is pretty much anything), especially for such a beast setup. I'm eying the CM 690 II for myself, looks like a work of art.

Yep, right around 900 as is

Cases are a personal touch, we can recommened a case and say why, but its up to the person that pays the bill. ;)

I was thinking SSD, but i wasn't sure about the price points on them.

And it might not necessarily need watercooling, but the older PC that I currently have sounds like a fricking airplane right now. I've had it going on 5 years, and have several drives in it, so it's like I live in a wind tunnel some nights.

SSD is a performance upgrade, so the price per GB is not as relevant as sheer speed. It'll catch up. Solid state storage will replace mechanical storage outright, soon enough.

I'm sure it will. I was just worried about blowing the majority of my build money on it.

Oh, nohz man! I built someone a $750 office PC with an SSD for the OS & Apps:

Cheapish case - $60
Decent H55 mobo - $110
i3 with built-in graphics - $130
4GB DDR3 - $90
*FAST* 64GB SSD for OS/Apps - $200
500GB drive for data - $55
LiteOn DVD-RW - $22
Corsair 450 - $80

I'm a firm believer that EVERY new PC should have a decent SSD for the OS & Apps. I haven't gotten there due to my own budget constraints at the time as a student, but I will this summer :D

Speaking of Mobos. There ins't one in that first build, is there? Also, what's a good brand of RAM? I know that most of them are pretty damn good. Thinking G.Skill Ripjaws?

Unless you're overclocking ram is ram. Doesn't really matter who you buy from so might as well get the cheaper stuff.

Right. We can see what you need (usb3, sata 3.0, Firewire, etc) and we can see what is on sale a couple of days before you buy :)

I'll definitely check back before I buy. Just did the taxes so I only know a prelim on what I'm getting. As far as I know I should be pretty much fine with what you listed. I would like it to either be upgradeable or at least work for the next couple years so that I don't have to upgrade.

What about stepping up to the i7 920 over the xeon x3440? It's like $50 difference in price.

Completly different socket - add 100 to the mobo, 50 for the ram, 40 for the cpu...

That would be good if you're not going to be overclocking or only lightly overclocking. Remember you'll be needing a 1366 board for that i7, it only runs a little bit faster than the Xeon, and Xeons are higher binned chips, usually of higher performance capacity and die quality and require less voltage to both run at stock and overclock.

How important are RAM timings? I've been out of the loop for quite a few years, so there are quite a few things I don't really know the answer to.

Here's what I've put together so far:

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119216
Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128406
Proc: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117225
Vid Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150442
PS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231283
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181
Cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118056

This is mostly what gwarren recommended... I did change up the cooling and the case, but those are still up in the air a bit. Hopefully i got the parts correct, as there are usually multiple options (of course) so I may have picked the wrong "version". I may also use an SSD... Still up in the air about that.

Found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227475 decently priced OCZ SSD at 60 GB that I'm considering.

All told I'm at 1210 right now.

you don't have to buy your case from newegg, you can buy it from another vendor thaht offers free shipping

look around

I know, but i'd like to keep it all in one if possible. I'll check around though.

Question on that board: I see it's SATA 6.0 gb/s... I'm assuming that SATA 3.0 gb/s stuff will play fine with it? Is that a correct assumption?

Hopefully the return will be here either in the morning or Friday (the day it was supposed to be in).

So far, everything is the same with the exception of the vid card. The one I linked earlier is now out of stock, so I stepped up slightly.

Might change my mind on the cooler, as well. Not sure at this point. Any other suggestions/tips before I purchase (hopefully Friday morning at the latest)?

Money is def. in now. Only issue I can see atm is that the Samsung Spinpoint drives are out of stock in the 500 gb variety on Newegg. That leaves me with a couple choices.

1. Get a different brand drive for my main drive. (Suggestions there?)
2. Get the 2 TB
3. Find it somewhere else.

I'm between 1 and 2 right now.

Either way, if no one posts up changes here shortly, I should be ordering by this afternoon.

Well, that made me cry just a little bit! Tears of joy (yay, finally new computer) and tears of sadness (good by almost $1200).

Again, thanks to all who helped me in this thread.
