Since the [H]orde central sticky is a bit old and a bit confusing for everyone, I thought about creating another sticky solely for setup guides. All it require is to have valid links to current guides here and/or elsewhere (you need approval to link to guides outside here).

What you get for this task is recognition and a shot at the [H]ardDCer of the month ;)

 
Here is my guide for setting up an upload for a personal stats page using FAHMon (similar to this that can then be checked from anywhere), and there have been a few good guides lately from tigerbiten (VM setup) and EvilAlchemist (Diskless Folding) that can be added to a new list

A lot of the stuff in the old sticky is still relevant, but probably just needs to be sorted and organized a bit.

edit: if nobody else is up for the taking, I can probably get something worked out later on this afternoon, just have a few things to do first

I need to redo the "Numbers Game" part as thats a few years out of date and theres a much easier way of working out your PpD via FahInfo.

I also need to check how easy it is to install Notfreds on a VM.

Not to sure how relevent the first part of "Linux Tips & Tricks FAQ" is but I used the second half, Samba part, to work out how to setup samba in my VM's.
Just remove any metion of EMIII from title.
Or even split that into two guides, An updated "Install as a Service" and a modded "Set up a Samba share".

The flags part needs tidying up as well.

But you need to give me a day or so to get more info together.

Yea I'm gonna see what kind of info we can get together here, then make updated relevant threads where needed (or get a mod to update the old threads), then post it all and get the new sticky

 
How to use flags in Windoze...........

Right click on the FAH.exe and select "Create Shortcut".
Now right click on new shortcut and select "Properties".
The flags get added to the end of the Target line.
ie. "C:\Fah\fah.exe" -flag1 -flag2

If your running folding as a service then the flags must get added to the end of the line that starts the service.

How to use flags in Linux ..........

If you start folding in a terminal window then add the flags to the start line
./FAH6 -flag
Again the flags get added to the line that starts the service as needed.

Which Flags .................

-config
Lets you change your config settings and the start the client.

-config only
Lets you change your config setting but does not start the client.
Usefull if you want to run as a service.

-send x
Trys to send result #x back to server.
Exits after trying to send unit (successfully or unsuccessfully).
Use "-send all" to send all results outstanding.
The client stop after trying to send work back.
The client will try to send back every 3 hours so only usefull if your getting tight on the final deadline.

-verbosity x
Sets the output level, from 1 to 9 (max).
The default is 3.
This option should be used if the user wishes to see more detailed client output, particularly useful if there is a problem which needs to be reported to the F@H client development team.

-oneunit
Instruct the client to quit following the completion of one work unit.

-forceasm
Instruct the core to use SSE/3DNow assembly instructions if possible, even if it has previously made the determination that the machine may not be handling this well.
Very usefull if your client gets shut down incorrectly ie. power cut.
The SMP client has this switch set in the software.

-advmethods
Request to be assigned work units from new projects, before they are broadly released to the rest of Folding@home.
As among the first to try out new advanced simulations, you may wish to post any observations (positive or negative), questions, or issues at the user Forum.

-local
Use configuration files from local directory.
This option has no meaning on Linux, but was vital on Windows and Macintosh for running multiple clients on a machine.
Not sure how vital it is now.

-smp
Start the v6 client in SMP mode.

-gpu
Starts the v6 client in GPU mode.

-help
Gives you a list of possible flags

There are a few more flags but these are the major ones.

Try to separate them in 2 threads, 1 for the [H]orde basics and activities (everything related to the [H]orde) and 1 for the guides and tips/tricks. Like that, each thread would be less big and more easier to read.

We also need to remake a new [H]ardDCer of the month/year thread like the old one.

 
Something else that was asked for in another thread....our old "How does my cpu compare" thread. It's getting a bit long in the tooth and not sure when the last update was....but now that we have a lot more c2d and c2q boxes it might be time to revive this chart and keep it current

Basic Numbers ........................

All work units are benchmarked at Stanford before being released into the wild.

Standard single CPU work units are benched at 110 PpD.
Bonus single CPU work units are benched at 165 PpD.
Standard SMP work units are benched at ?. I thinks its around 4-5 times the Single CPU value.
The benchmark computer is a P4 @2.8 Ghz running SSE instructions.

Standard GPU work units are benched at 660 PpD.
The benchmark card is a X1900.

Standard PS3 work units are benched at 900 PpD.

How much faster-slower than this figure will you run depends on basicaly two things.
What core type your CPU/GPU has and how fast it runs.
These account for over 90% of your basic folding speed the rest is made up with by things like memory speed, OS (Windoze/Linux), etc, etc.

To Find Out How Well You Are Doing..................

To find you how well you are doing vs the standard machine first find the protein you are folding either by looking in the FAHlog.txt file or by useing a third party app like FahMon or FahSpy.
Then go to FahInfo -> Work unit search.
You can now enter just your Work Unit's p number or enter your p number & CPU info as well.
If you just entered your p number then follow the links till you find your CPU's core.
If you cannot find the exact core then use a very close relative.
This will give you a Points per Day per Ghz number.
Now multiply this number by the Ghz of your CPU to get your expected PpD form this protien.
If your useing FahMon or FahSpy now check this figure agianst your projected PpD figure.
If the number from FahInfo is a lot bigger than your projected figure then there may be something wrong with your setup.

Expected PpDpGhz numbers ....................

Single CPU client numbers range from ~25 PpDpGhz for slow proteins on old CPU to ~150 PpDpGhz for the bonus proteins on modern CPU.
SMP CPU client numbers range from ~100 PpDpGhz for slow proteins on slow CPU's to ~300 PpDpGhz for fast proteins on fast CPU's. With SMP units multiply this figure by the number of cores folding the protein before multipling by the CPU's speed to get the expected PpD of the box.
I'm not sure of GPU numbers.
All PS3 fold at 900 PpD.

I think the SMP units is tested on a Xeon Clovertown system but I don't know the specs about it.

I would either split the "linux tip & tricks" into two or just loose the first part if there are other good guides on how to set up the linux client to run as a service.

If splitting in two then the first part needs updateing to the latest client.

The second part needs changing from "Monitor your Linux Folding Boxen using samba and EMIII" to "Monitor your Linux Folding Boxen using samba and Fahmon".
Then swop any mention of EMIII to Fahmon.

I'll look into the "Power Consumption FAQ" later unless somebody else wants to do it.
Anybody know a good site which shows all/most CPU and/or GPU power draw.

The thread doesn't need to have users posting in it, only being used as reference. This should be linked with all the nomination threads. I made a 2nd post in that thread as space for the interviews.
 
my spring break officially starts today, so i'll now have time to stop being lazy and wrap this up and submit it for approval :p
