Rich posted robots with Tasers on them last week, this week we have shotgun shell Tasers that can drop you from 100ft away. Very cool stuff (in a scary kinda way).

As the self-contained XREP wireless Taser round exits the shotgun barrel, three fins pop out to stabilize it as it flies through the air. Its four electrodes on the front each have a barb that can penetrate clothing and embed itself into the body of its victim. It will continue shocking its victim for 20 seconds, giving the officers enough time to apprehend the suspect.

Yikes 20 seconds? Thats gonna hurt bad.... usually a few (5-10) is enough.

Also hope they double check their ammo before they use it :p

Loaded into an ordinary 12-gauge shotgun

Thats a pretty sweet weapon.

Can't wait to see the vids of them testing it.

Interesting. It gets rid of the problems that plague pistol tasers (wires and one shot capability).

Plus, bean bags/rubber bullets may knock someone down but they can get back up and run. Depending on the situation of course.

I dont know what was wrong with the beanbags, Ive never seen someone just ignore being shot in the stomach by one of those. Maybe it will have a use in certain situations, like when Sam wants to do a no-kill game.

"This baby belongs to them cloners. What you got here is a Kamino saberdart."

You'd be amazed at how much pain a person on PCP can take. I imagine a taser like this that would go for 20 seconds should be sufficient for those situations.

According to the taser people, nobody can ever be hurt in an shape form or fashion by a taser regardless of how long they are being zapped.

20 seconds does seem a tad bit long.

Just want to add that I guess they say that the electricity running through your body does nothing to your body or it's own electrical system.

Thus why a couple dozen people a year die after being tasered, I'm guessing?

I'd love to see the reaction of having a shotgun pulled on you and being told "We are going to taze you" I'm pretty sure the perp would freak the hell out... then the shotgun goes off.. BOOM.. wakes up the whole neighborhood and the guy thinks he is dead.. then ZZZZZAP for 20 seconds.. freaky shit.

Aren't officers that carry tasers required to experience it for themselves?

It had better the same case for these, otherwise I don't see how they would have any right to use it on someone.

Those electrodes seem like they would pierce fairly deep into the skin too...

Wow, this post is right up my alley. I happen to know alot on this subject. LOL..

I currently carry the X26 Taser. It provides 5 seconds of charge when the trigger is depressed. For each pulling of the trigger, it will continue to cycle for an additional 5 seconds. It's a less than lethal alternative that packs 50,000 volts. It only has .0021 amps. Not even 1 full amp. http://www.taserx26.com/Police_X26.pdf

As for killing people, I won't go into everything that is involved when a taser is deployed. I am part of a tactical unit that is equipped with the X26 taser. Simply stating that tasers KILL people is VERY innaccurate. Truth be told, actions leading up to being tasered are almost always one of the main deciding factors if the final result ends in death. Having worked with tasers for several years, there are some things that should be known.

Example .. A guy (or girl.. doesn't matter) injects / ingests a large amount of narcotics. Now that individual is high on narcotics (herion, cocaine, etc). Everyday, I deal with people who are either selling, concealing, using or buying narcotics. This has been my job for almost 10 years now. When the police contact an individual who is high, and ultimately combative, and the taser gets deployed, a few radical dynamics are at work here. 1. If that individual is high on a stimulant drug like cocaine or meth, that individuals heart is working overtime. 2. The objective of an Officer is NOT to kill someone but rather eliminate the threat (pepper spray, soft or hard open hand control, taser, etc). Heck, if I could TALK my way out of something rather than get hit on or get in a fight, I would LOVE that. 3. The fact is, that the taser seems to speed up the inevitable. If that person OD'd on Cocaine and wants to fight the police and ends up getting tasered, the damage was done the moment he began accelerating his or her heart with drugs. An overworked heart is an overworked heart. Certainly adding a very small electrical charge isn't going to be beneficial to an already overworked heart. Most of the time, it is ruled that the drug was the cause of death and that the taser only played a small role in accelerating an already deterierated overworked nervous / cardiovascular system. It plays a small role but is almost always never the main reason that caused the death.

The problem is understanding the dynamics. Tasers, in general, do NOT kill people. Actions leading up to being tasered are almost always the culprit if the result ends in a fatality during a taser deployment. I have been tasered probably TEN+ times. I hate it. I hate each and everytime. Have I died? Of course not. Would a 90 year old man who has a severe heart problem, likely to be more affected by being tasered than me (a 35 year old heathly man)? Could be. Taser's have been proven time and time again. Tested over and over. Several myths still exist about taser's and the few that don't know what they are talking about, seem to always pave the way to those who have an open ear and closed mind.

Will a taser work on an individual who is hopped up on PCP? Depends. Both times I have encountered guys high on PCP, the taser was not effective. It has also been my experience that the taser is "hit and miss" as far as effectiveness when individuals are high on crack or meth. What about shooting a taser in the water at or if you are standing in a puddle. Not an issue. It will NOT shock you. The shaped charge of the X26 taser is quite remarkable. Unless you have BOTH probes making contact on you, you are likely not to receive the full impact of the taser. If you are "in the loop" and directly touching the probes or wires, you will more than likely take a ride. Ouch. But the pain is immediate. As soon as the 5 seconds are over, thats it. Immediate relief. Also, its VERY effective and efficient when it comes to compliance. Unlike pepper spray, which its effects could last up to an hour, the taser is immediate. 5 seconds. If no other compliance is necessary, 5 seconds of pain compliance is ALL the arrest person will get. NOT 45 to 1 hour of pain or discomfort in the case of pepper spray. Not broken bones or busted lips as is the case with hard open hand control or the use of a baton. Obviously no bullet holes.

I will say that it's a very GOOD deterent. No one WANTS to be hit by some flying electrical 50,000 volt fish hooks. LOL.. So, by merely displaying the taser and advising the combative person to calm down or he / she will get hit with 50,000 volts almost always works for me. Oh, while I am on the subject.. Will the taser stop a pace maker? The answer maybe a surprise, but the answer is NO, it will not. Shot after shot after shot and time over again, it has yet to stop a pace maker. So, if that was the only factor, simply put, a man or woman with a pace maker gets a "5 second ride" with the taser, his or her pace maker would continue to work with no problem.

OK.. its getting late. Anything else you wanna know? ..Hahaha.

Interesting, I wonder if the launch pressures are low enough to be used in 12ga flare guns?:D

Good post officermartinez. Thanks for the job you guys are doing to protect our streets.

Great post, thanks for informing us masses. Although, this sentence made me wig out for a second. A taser with a full amp of current would almost make a subject explode! It only takes .06 amps to stop breathing and heartbeat. Still, I agree that a taser is WAY below that.

UBISoft must be calling their lawyers as we speak :D . Easily the best weapon in the Splinter Cell series. The Sticky Shocker

Ow. just.. Ow.. Sounds like a great way to give somebody a fatal heart attack.

Yes, there are a few unfortunate individuals that have heart problems, but those who are usually susceptible to such things, are mostly spherically shaped individuals that resemble Jabba the Hutt.

The way I see it, if you're a fat, spherically shaped blob of flesh, then you shouldn't be committing crimes. :)

One additional bonus is that tasers do not affect innocent bystanders (unless the person firing it misses :p ) I have witnessed someone getting pepper-sprayed and taken down by police outside a bar, and with 2 cops spraying him 10 ft away from me it was enough for me to cough and for my eyes to hurt for a good 15 minutes. Even with the pepper spray it took 5 cops to hold him down. I'm sure some cops have misused tasers intentionally or not however I would rather they be misused than pepper spray, batons or guns.

Ok, some questions since you seem to be a well informed user of the current taser systems.

How extensive do you think the issue is with people grabbing the x-26 isnted of their pistol or their pistol instead of their x-26? I've heard reports and coplaints of both, and it of course has dramtic impact on the outcome of a situation either way.

Assuming that the choice to tase someone rather than get in a life threatening conflict is a generally good thing, which you appear to agree with, what are your thoughts on the following.

Given that tasing is supposed to be the least damaging option to everyone involved in a officer/perp conflict, is sticking it in a shotgun a good idea? Do you really see carrying two shotguns into a situation? Will you make the decision before leaving your vehicle and assessing the situation? Or is it more realistic that the system will basically claim you use it in the above two methods but will be practically used by sticking it in the magazine and cycling the weapon? Given the high-stress of cofnrontation situations, what do you think will be the failure rate on the above compared ot other less-lethal methods of ending a conflict?

From a suit/pr perspective, most failures of the x-26 system and handheld stun guns are usually balmed on officer training. Do you think there is a widespread issue regarding training with the x-26 system? Do you think training issues will crop up more frequently by taking a $600 device and replacing it with what is supposed to be about a $30-40 device that works in gear a department already has and "knows how to use".

Do you find that the funky shaped and often brightly colored x-26 escalates a situation lsimilarly to drawing your pistol on someone? Do you think pointing a shotgun at someonethat is a real shotgun that looks like a real shotgun will escalate a situation?

Right now, if you arrived on the scene as support only to find officer bob discharging his shotgun at a perp, would you back him up and shoot the perp if they were not incapacitated? What would you do in the same situation if your department was currently deployign this system?

How do you think public perception of law enforcement officers will fare when the general public see you brandishing a shotgun and firing at someone simply to gain compliance rather than to end a lethal threat? Do you think this approach could possibly do anything but exacerbate the rift between LEOs and the public with the whole us vs. them perception?

Like I said, the technology opens up more less lethal options, and that's good. However, I think that the platform chosen to deploy it is a huge accident waiting to happen. I'd much rather see something akin to the fn-303 for the platform. Something that can't fire lethal ammunition, or at least can't fire any lethal ammunition the department purchases. the 12ga shotgun is not something that meets that requirement.

Oh yeah, there's also the taser remote area denial system announced.

taser claymores.

I'm thinking a sheet of plywood with some handles screwed on the back will likely be the answer to this multi-kilobuck(megabuck?) system.

I'm thinking taser has seen sales flatten and is trying to make something happen.. hopefully they'll have an good idea soon.

20 seconds is an eternity for a taser shock.

I did 3 seconds voluntarily at a product demo at a racetrack and that felt long enough...

I wonder, say a cop with a taser gun was called to a house because of someone takin a heart attack and he got their before the paramedics, now say the person taking the heart attack, their heart truly stopped after the attack and they were basically dead unless they got shocked by the paramedics or CPR, would a cop use his taser on the person if he knew that the persons heart had stopped and that the ambulance was a good 5-10 minutes away and that basically their was no chance to save the person except for a shock of some kind ? and would a taser be sufficient to give such a shock similar to what the paramedics carry ? I know tasers will knock anyone on their ass but would the taser shock be too little to restart the heart ?

Basically what I am saying is, could the taser also be used to save someones life if their heart had stopped and wasnt gunna start on its own.

Just to add, as I cant edit the previous post, I stuck my fingers into an old style light bulb socket a few years back and pushed the 2 prongs down, never ever ever again will I do that shit, it was the worst horrible feeling I have ever experienced in my life and it scared the shit out of me

ive been voluntarily tasered also,

it sucks while its going on, but its over after its over.

I'm going to say no but I have no backing on this. With a modern defibrillator that is above skin(early ones used ac and were open chest use) it gives like a 5 milisecond jolt. Think they are only around a thousand volts or so. With a stun gun your are dealing with 20000 to 50000 or higher for a second or more. I'm thinking that the stun guns are ac as well. without looking up the numbers and coverting everything I'm thinking the chances are slim. Someone feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong though

Shock padles uses 50-200 joules to restart a heart, a taser such as the x26 uses only 0.3 joules. A taser pushes only 0.00004 milliamp to the heart, whereas a pacemaker uses 10 milliams to keep a heart going.

I believe they restarted one persons heart in a movie with a taser, this is simply not possible under above circumstances.
