Be it a system error or a sale, Target stores are listing the PS3 at $499. There isn’t any indication at this time as to why, but it might not hurt to call your local store and check.

We've spent the last hour on the phone calling up random Target stores around the continental United States to nail this story down. What we can say at this point is that certain Target stores do currently have the $499 price on the PS3 (Item# 207230001).

I guess a hot deal if over-DRM'ed media and reheated sports games is you thing. :p

(I keed, I keed.)

Glad to see these prices finally coming down.

Me thinks error. :(

Yup, or Sony is going to look very dumb. Just last week they said that they where not going to lower the price. And if it is truly a price drop a lose just that much more respect for Sony.

It's not an error; Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target all have it listed in the their circular. Pictures of the sales were leaked last week. The real question is whether or not this reduction is permanent? Sony has said no, but Sony and MS both like to say “No” until they are ready, i.e. no Elite and the 20GB model discontinuation.

Speculation is we’ll know more after E3 as many predict Sony will announce any permanent new pricing there.

It is a price drop. It would be a pretty stupid move on Sony's part to announce a price drop in advance of it happening, as every consumer considering the purchase of a PS3 would wait for the lower price. Unfortunately for Sony, the retailers leaked it.

Guys we know it was dropping there were pictures of 3 different circulars; Sony was simply saying it wasn't a price drop across the board. These circulars are for the weekly sales. Sunday-Saturday is how it typically works.

It could also very well be a permanent price drop and Sony just wanted to announce at E3.

MS kept saying no, the elite is not coming we have several new piece of technology we want to evaluate and look at this is not going to be a new model and less than a month later the Elite is announce

Also, for those who haven't heard

Sony confirmed the $499 price cut and are looking to bring over an 80GB bundle with HDMI cable and a copy of Motostorm for $599 in August.

Motorstorm was actually a pretty fun game with more content being made available for download and a patch to enable split screen with some other features. I'm hoping the copy that ships will have some of these extra goodies as many felt the game was lacking in content.

Sony Confirms PS3 Price-Cut, 80GB Bundle
This news? Hot. So hot it couldn't wait another couple of days. David Karraker has confirmed that starting today, the 60GB model of the PS3 will drop to $499. Excellent, if not entirely unexpected, news. Better still is a second announcement: that North America will be getting their hands on the 80GB model of the PS3 (to help with Sony's plans for HD movie downloads), which will be bundled with MotorStorm, and will cost $599 (though won't be available until August). Keep in mind this news is for North America ONLY, so everywhere else, sit tight. No...tighter. If you want, kill some time by reading the AP press release after the click.

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a
bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games
and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80
gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title
``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100
price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States
and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering
downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and
demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

Karraker said further details on high-def movies for download would be
released at a later date.

The announcement comes two days before the E3 Media & Business Summit
in Santa Monica, Calif., where dozens of industry heavyweights
including Sony rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. are expected to
show off their latest games and related products.

In April, Microsoft began selling a version of its Xbox 360 with a
120-gigabyte hard drive and a souped up high-definition video
connection. Called Xbox 360 Elite, the black-colored system sells for
$479.99.

Xbox gamers who already own the $399.99 20-gigabyte model can buy a
snap-on 120-gigabyte hard drive for $179.99.

Karraker said Sony would use the E3 show to focus on two areas: ways
to increase the number of consumers who own PS3s and other products
such as the PlayStation Portable handheld system, and expanding the
system's library of available games.

He said Sony would be releasing 100 new video games during the current
fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as
the hack-and-slash action title ``Heavenly Sword."

Last post I promise;
SCEA corporate video: President & CEO Jack Tretton announces the availability of a new 80GB PS3, and a price drop for the 60GB PS3. More info can be found on the official Sony PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com).

He talks a bit about the video download service we all knew was coming.
