Given an emergency situation where I only had access to tapwater and anti-freeze. How long would it take the tapwater to do serious damage to my cooling components?

The pump should be fine since aquarium pumps deal with much worse in aquariums. But would mineral deposits be the only thing that would be a problem?
 
if you don't have unusually hard water and you don't have a block that clogs easily you should be fine with a bit of antifreeze.
 
We have a water cooler in our house, so I just used water from that and some anti-freeze, it's De-Mineralized water.

I can't tell you if it did anything harmful, I just ripped down my watercooling because I forgot to tape the barbs for the Radiator... plus tomorrow I am going to drill holes in the top of my case for the Radiator to sit on top of my case.
 
Go get a Brita water filter and you will be able to get most of the junk out of your plain H20. Also works good for your palate as well. :D
 
What if you have softwater.

Where it goes threw that rock salt filter would that be good or is the water from the store better.
 
Aren't home water softeners only hooked up to feed the hot water heater? I think softened water is salty, which would be bad for the loop (corossion++).

depends on the area and the plumber who did the job. in my place the kitchen cold water tap is the only unsoftened water in the house. the water is SO hard that it will block tap aerators, deposit inside of toilet tanks and doesn't rinse soap off in the shower. it tastes pretty good though. :)

"aberfoyle springs water" as well as quite a bit of "nestle" is bottled about 20 minutes away, using the same well water that the municiple supply runs off of. same deal with sleeman beer.

a water softener swaps dissolved Ca ions in the water for Na ions, using a specialized resin. the brine is not really supposed to get into the drinking water, since it's only washed through the resin once daily, then down the drain, to carry away the Ca that has been taken out of the water and replenish the supply of Na in the resin.
